Developing Scissors Skills

Jamie had a go at cutting out the pictures of superheroes. At first, he was unsure how to hold the scissors. He held the scissors with two hands, without holding the paper, so I modelled Jamie how to hold the scissors by putting the thumb in one hole and then the index and middle fingers in the other hole. Jamie was able to follow the instruction and held the scissors correctly.

With deep concentration, Jamie carefully cut around the picture. He held the paper up to guide his cutting, and said, "I have to be careful I don't cut my finger," until he was able to manage to finish the whole picture. Jamie exclaimed, "I didn't even cut his head!" And then he laughed. He showed his cut-out superhero to me and his friend, then after that, he glued the superhero onto a paper.

Jamie seemed to feel a sense of satisfaction and pride for being able to finish cutting a picture with scissors. He demonstrated persistence, resilience and good concentration as he was doing the activity.

For future possibilities, Jamie will be provided with more opportunities and experiences where he will be able to develop his fine motor skills necessary for writing and cutting (e.g. playdough scissors, cutting tray, fine motor activities that make use of pegs, tongs, etc.).

The above anecdotal record is an example of an observation I made on the child to describe his engagement in an activity where he was given an opportunity to use his fine motors (which are necessary for school readiness). As a Preschool Teacher/Educator, I make observations for the following specific reasons:

  • Planning the programs or experiences
  • Gauging and knowing if the child has achieved his or her goals
  • Describing the child's interest, skills, and abilities
  • Providing parents with information about their child's learning and experiences

It’s amazing the amount of concentration kids can put in an activity, when they want it.

That's right, and what's more amazing is that they can still concentrate despite all the noise in their environment. I don't think my brain will absorb anything if there's too much noise going on in the background.
