My thoughts on....Physiotherapy for an athlete.

in #teammalaysia6 years ago

Hello steemians, Im back with another post!

This post will be about my views on physiotherapy for an athlete.
As a golf athlete, my body is very precious to me. All other athletes on different field of sports would agree with me on this.
We must always prepare and train our body constantly to be able to bring out our maximum performance on tournament days. But sometimes our body would break down from all the physical stress that we put them in and there are times when resting is just not enough to bounce back to our optimal performance.
Just imagine that our body is a high performance car. Even the best cars needs a capable mechanic and a workshop to keep its title as a "high performance car"
So this is where physiotherapy comes in.

What is physiotherapy

So basically physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. Be it by using manual therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy. Physiotherapy is performed by physiotherapists that has a great understanding of the body's bio-mechanics and kinesiology.

Why do athletes need physiotherapy

Since an athlete is always using their body rigorously for their sport MOST of the time. It is a no brainer that sometime down the line the body would start to deteriorate due to excessive build up of muscle spasms, scar tissue, muscle stiffness and so on. Most of these problems CANT be cured by just resting. The best way to fix the mentioned problems is physiotherapy.
When you develop problems like muscle spasms (Muscle spasm is an involuntary contraction of a muscle that can cause a great deal of pain. When problematic muscle become injured or inflamed) for instance, the way our body responds to that is by compensating the primary movement of the spasming muscle with another nearby muscle group. Which in turn causes muscle imbalance and more injuries.
But if you are able to make a date to your local physiotherapist before the problem becomes too big. Usually it will be resolved in less than a week depending on the severity of your problem.
When I started out as a golf athlete, the term physiotherapy was alien to me. I didnt even know that it existed until it was too late. By the time i learned of physiotherapy, i was neck deep in injuries caused by muscle fatigue and physical stress. Even at this time of writing I am still doing muscle rehab on an injury i had 8 years ago. o(╥﹏╥)o
So it goes to show how important being able to fix those problematic muscles before it gets too hard to fix it.

Think of it as an investment for an athlete's future

As an athlete, being able to consistently perform greatly in your sport in a long term is not an easy task to achieve.
Like all things in this world, nothing last forever. But what we can do is make them last as long as they can.
So in order to perform your best as long as you can, you must always take care of your body as long as you can too.
Always bring your high performance car to do monthly maintenance to keep it always performing at its best! O(≧▽≦)O

So thats it for today's post. It was hard to explain physiotherapy without using its scientific lingo (Im pretty bad at that).
But hopefully you guys get the idea that i was trying to put across.

For the peeps who stayed till the end, i thank you for your participation.
I will be seeing you guys in my next posts!
