Thanks to Hubby for the idea of today's post, we have been non-stop talking about the events of the last three days and 9th of May 2018 is indeed going to be a date etched in my memory for a long time! Not to mention the fact that I was literally in and out in less than 5 minutes at my polling center whilst a lot of others had to wait for hours! Hubby also managed to do his in a very short time.

That's us proudly showing off our inked finger

So much has happened over the last few dayss and it has been an emotional roller coaster ride for me and I am sure for millions of Malaysians who poured into voting centers all over the country on the 9th of May 2018 to exercise their constitutional right to vote with hope in their heart for a new government that will rid the country of corruption and kleptocracy. A government whose purpose is to serve and bring betterment to the people of Malaysia.

This GE 14 (14th General Election) of Malaysia is such a historic event in the lives of all Malaysians today! To me it was really "Hari in dalam sejarah!" It was a day that the people stood up and made our choice known. We came out together in unity regardless of race or religion with one purpose which was to resoundingly throw out the abuse of power and corruption that has been rife in our country for as long as I can remember.

Throughout this entire process running up to the actual polling day, we watched unbelievably the intimidation by the authorities with draconian laws like the Anti-Fake News Act 2018, an absurd delineation exercise that was blatantly designed to favour the ruling party, the money politics and vote buying and not to mention the arbitrary and ludicrous rules imposed by the Election Commission (EC). Even on polling day itself, the diabolical plot of phantom voters, fake votes and refusal to sign off the vote counting results was just horrendous. Even after the results were clear, the lying and cheating continued unabated. The winners were treated with disdain and contempt, the process riddled with delays. I know I make it sound like a bad horror movie but that was how the last 48 hours felt like.

Having said all that, I am really so proud of all my fellow Malaysians who made a stand supporting each other, remained calm and I believed continued to pray in their own way for Tun Dr Mahathir to be sworn in as our 7th Prime Minister. When it finally happened, I could feel the entire nation breathe a palpable sigh of relief after a nail-biting day waiting for it to happen.

Tun Dr M and his wife. I took this screenshot whilst watching it live

On top of that I felt that the PACAs (Polling Agent & Counting Agent) are really the unsung heroes of Malaysia's GE 14. They gave freely of their time to train as a PACA to ensure fair and free elections. Many also traveled outstation to help in the smaller and more rural constituencies. They were really instrumental in ensuring that the entire process of voting, counting and signing of form 14 was done in accordance to the law. From the many facebook postings, I believe that it was because of them and many other citizens who stood outside voting centers to help made that made a difference in the election results that day.

Friends who volunteered. Thank you to all of you!

So where do we go from here? For the last 3 to 4 days I have reminded myself that I have woken to a NEW Malaysia. But what does that mean? What does that mean for the common man or woman like me? I have been glued to Facebook feeds and online news till the wee hours of the morning. 3 am....4 am... and what? What's next? As my title says this is REBOOT! This is a chance to start things over again! Personally, for me and my family, these are some reflections that I believe will change for us from today onwards.

#1 I must believe and have faith that things will change

For the longest time, I have always felt that Malaysia will always have this issue and that issue and all that cannot change! Whilst I was born here, I have always felt like I needed to migrate somewhere else, (New Zealand please!) to be able to live the way I want to live. I felt that things like a good education for my children was impossible! But now, I want to start believing that things maybe can change after all! In fact, I am sure that once I start doing this, somehow opportunities will come my way, great relationships will be formed and greater things can come.

#2 As a citizen of Malaysia I must be a part of that change

Since I have been glued to the computer/mobile phone screen over the last few days, I have noticed so many people share their opinions and expressed them in a variety of ways. For me I noticed that it was all too easy to complain, criticise and condemn. It starts with me, with all of us... can I be supportive first and foremost, gracious in circumstances that we don't know all the fact and humble when responding to others especially online? I want to start by thinking the best of people. This is even more important as Malaysia is multi racial country. It would too easy for distrust to creep in and destroy everything that is good. So let's really embrace our identity as Malaysians! We must not let other people define who we are.

#3 Be part of the solution rather than the problem

I must not be apathetic any longer. So many Malaysians have risen up in recent years to be the solution to help with the change that has finally happened this year. I can't imagine, if people like Rafizi Ramli did not start invoke, we would have no PACAs at all. He found a solution to a problem! It took him years but he is now seeing the fruits of his labour. Can we do the same? Not just sit on the sidelines and watch but to jump in there and give of ourselves. Hmm....maybe I will start a party and run for the next GE? Not! But seriously there are many different ways that you can contribute to nation building. Find something that resonates with you and give.

#4 Forgive but do not forget so easily

I remember in one of the many speeches during the campaigning period, I heard something that struck me about Malaysians just going back to their "normal" life after this. It is very easy to forget about stuff with the passing of time. Events and transgressions become a dim memory and we forget that it acts as life lessons to become better. In essence, we must continue to hold our government and politicians accountable for their actions. For me, I have so much respect for Tun Dr Mahathir wanting to right the wrongs, some which were perpetrated by him many many years ago. I really love this video that expressed regret over his mistakes. But I will be watching to see if this change does take place and not take for granted that it will happen. Indeed Lord Acton was right when he said, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"

#5 Change takes time

I must remind myself to be patient and give Pakatan Harapan a fighting chance. After all, the previous government had 61 years. Demanding for immediate change and results is unreasonable. I will be looking out for obvious change progressions and if I get huge change, it will be a bonus!

I am going to start truly loving and being proud of Malaysia. I have lived here for the last 30 odd years give or take. I spent a few years overseas in university and for work but this is really the only home that I have. So I am going to love it and be proud of it. To give whilst I am here. Who knows I might still migrate in time to come but for now, this is HOME!

Indeed, I can now say "Malaysia Boleh!" without my usual sarcasm. Let's grab this chance of a new start together! We have so much to look forward to!

I am cliche so here, enjoy this rendition of "Sejahtera Malaysia"

This is my answer for what I would do for the new Malaysia.
i will bring change by involving in malaysia history education by make it interesting . too long we have boring history lesson.

Thank you @hooiyeelim! Yes, history is very important to the country. Unfortunately we have people that think changing history is acceptable!

Thank you very much for your posting in Teh Tarik ( and also your comment in my post ),
I am fully in agreement with your article about the word "Reboot" for the New Malaysia.
I was born before the Merdeka day and has gone thru the "hard time". and I am so pleased to see the New Malaysia is born and a Reboot in its memory bank
In your post content, I could see you have done some research and got hold of the latest official announcement about the new government and sworn in ceremony of the new PM.
In particular, I like the five points you have derived. As a Malaysian, it is time to be part of the change, and willing to make changes as a way of life going forward. There will be a different impact as a result of the outcome of GE14 nevertheless, not everyone will be happy and it will remain so no matter how perfect is the new government.
Then the remedy falls under your point #3 that we shall not become part of the problem. True enough that in many cases, a solution is within yourself. If we are not part of the problem, then we don't need a solution, right? then we all can focus on progress rather than spend time-solving the problem.
On your point #4, yes and reminders have sent via social media and messengers app that we forgive to forget but there are still many people hold on to the past by sending old images and articles about the past as if to remind people about the unfortunates. I have no idea what are the intention of these senders or resenders.
Yes, certainly every change needs time and as a citizen of Malaysia, we should allow the new government to do their job instead of speculating in social media or messenger app all the wrongdoing n the past. ( As if the new government does do not know about it ). And it is not wise to inform people about those unplesant events. And I dont understand why senders like to put salt onto wounds
Anyway, it is yet to see how well the citizen of the New Malaysia assit and do their duty as a citizen in makeind the transition

Anyway, great article about this post
Cheers

Thank you @digitalmind for your answer. I agree with you on the fact that some people like to continue harping about old stuff. I see people arguing and going all out to "hang" someone. Instead we should be supporting the new government and finding ways to be the solution right? Happy New Malaysia!

that is true. There are so many future issues to discuss and explore but many still like to dig the old stories.
Anyway, let's work on New Malaysia for better tomorrow
Cheers

Q: What would I do for our New Malaysia?

A: Continue to be the change I want to see in the Malaysia.

I want more innovation; therefore I must continue to innovate and add value to society.

I want more equality; therefore I must through my actions promote racial equality and equal opportunity.

I want more meritocracy; therefore I must improve myself everyday so I may earn my own merit to serve.

Thanks @buzz.lightyear for you answer! Love it!

I am very much inspired on #3 too. I hope for many more aspiring Malaysians to renew their passion in public and community service. Personally I don't think I can play a direct and active role in the public sector but I want to have a new supportive mindset to encourage younger siblings and even future little ones to pursue a career in the public sector.
#newmalaysia

Yay! Change the public sector to be more efficient and good!

I asked myself this question, and did write a post on FB. Hahaha. Yes, I know I know.

The first thing I did is read the manifesto of the new govt so that I am aware of what we are all working towards. I can no longer feign ignorance as the govt is not a separate entity. It is US the people.

It's time we took ownership of governance upon ourselves. In obeying the rule of law.

Racial equity starts from within. Not being judgemental or letting my stereotypes create impressions, even in the tiniest things like when a driver causes irritation, or how someone speaks. We are Malaysian. How each of us is, has no bearing on our ethnicity, but a lot on our upbringing and education....so we change by working together to help ourselves and our fellow citizens by helping someone understand if possible , and if not, to at least not judge them.

When we start judging and condemning we forget our intention to build, and start ripping each other down...one small judgement at a time.

So I guess, my biggest thing would be to see everyone as part of one big school playground....we all need to play nice, teach each other or be willing to be taught.

hahahah! I like that @kchitrah ever the teacher! PLAY NICE everyone! Happy New Malaysia. I agree though let's stop judging. Thanks for your answer

Answer for "What would I do for our New Malaysia?"

I had been doing and still doing is to empower people of Malaysia about new technology like Blockchain, Internet of Things and Modern web development. Cuz ppl seems to not following the trend in tech in Malaysia.

Amen to that! More adoption @superoo7 and you are doing an awesome job! Kipidab!

What would you do for our New Malaysia?

My answer: I would take laws and work ethics more seriously, lets work more systematically to restore the power of law and shape the best democratic model in Malaysia for the world to learn!

Hi @kymio! Thanks for your answer! Yes let's do that! The laws is important. What is the one thing that you would do personally to uphold the laws and work ethics?

Change has already happened even before the election and more will come int he coming days, weeks and months. It will come at the cost of the economy but we should consider the cost and an investment for a better future. Hopefully, we will see better results in the next few years. It took countries like Korea and Japan decades to grow, same will apply to Malaysia and yes, both the government and citizens need to play their role.

First thing we can change is to eliminate traditional voting and vote using blockchain system.. hehehe..

@orangila good one! Blockchain the future of voting! Thanks for your answer!

Maybe conditioned to think that nothing can change so why bother, I have not been as present as I would have liked to be.
Because it is true what they say, change starts with you. The man in the mirror. So for me is to be more present. If you believe in something for the good, even if you are in the “minority”, have faith and keep going. If it’s a good thing it will pick up given time.

This is a great post @khimgoh
Here’s to a New Malaysia 😊

Thank you @kaerpediem I used to be like that too. Totally apathetic. You should go watch the yourtube vidoe of how our postal votes from overseas came back. It was incredible how present those other Malaysians are overseas. Here is to a New Malaysia with more present Malaysians!

What would/could i do for New Malaysia.

  1. I will continue to fight for same equality (no bias in race) like what LGE say when press ask him about how he feel been appointed as Minister of Finance. “I am not a Chinese, I am Malaysian.

  2. I would continue to upgrade and serve my community around me for example Steemit, Church and etc.

  3. I continue to fight againts corruption (at my best level) that crossess my path of life, business.

  4. I continue to share more, give more and most importantly learn to forgive more often. People always tend to be forgiving bit only say sorry but deep down its still lingers.

  5. I would continue to do more charities in future as i know there are many out there more unfortunate than me.

  6. I would TRY to have better diet healthy life , to enjoy longer NEW Malaysia . We may not know, Pakatan Harapan will win again and again in the next coming election. 😬😬🙏🏻

Hope this will inspire people to have abetter and new Malaysia. God Bless You @khimgoh and your family. God Bless 🇲🇾 Malaysia.

Thanks @veenang for your answer! I really like #4 and #5 learning to be more giving and generous is really important. People nowadays only care about themselves. But I understand that it is really hard in today's world! Thank you and I look forward to you spearheading more giveaways and more encouraging other to give more too. You will be blessed abundantly over and above what you give I believe! Happy New Malaysia!
