SYNOPSIS

A gripping drama/thriller noir. Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) let a Nazi war criminal Konrad Meiniken go to lead him to the main mastermind of the WWII top on the wanted list.

Kondrad then lead the way to Connecticut and met Professor Charles Rankin (Orson Welles), a historian, and things start to go haywire. The whole town has no clue of who this Professor really is .It is up to Mr. Wilson to strip the Professor off his cover and bring him to justice.

What make things more difficult is the Professor is married to a local lady, Mary Longstreet (Loretta Young). And knowing a person who is capable of war crime is capable of anything just to cover his track and escape capture.

REVIEW

Oh the charm of film noir. The play of light and shadow never fail to paint drama onto anything. The beautiful screenplay and the flow of camera from subject to subject, from one face to another, from close to far....you just have to watch it to know.
It just goes without saying.

The thing that strike me is how the movie is done in 1946 and the end of WWII is less than a year before that. They seems to have already anticipated that the Nazi Germany made their way into the United States.

Some of the brilliant minds of the Nazi Germany, for example, Wernher von Braun, even being pardoned to become the aerospace engineer and space architect for NASA, and the transfer of German rocket technology.

Professor Charles Rankin is a master at operating clocks and is obsessed with it.

But in the case, he is being hunted to be put into trial, no matter what the expertise he has.

SPOILER

The ending, the main antagonist dies at the hand of the sword of the lady justice statue, revolving around the clock tower.
Lady of Justice statue is synonym with the United States. The ending can't be any better to establish in film the US victory over the Nazi.

A SPECIAL NOTE ON EDWARD G. ROBINSON

I love the masterful performance by him as Mr. Wilson. I grew up watching his brilliant play as Dathan in the 1956's The Ten Commandments on VHS.
