Ultimaker 3 Extended - 1 Month Review

Its Been Fun!

The ease of use is excellent. With proper documentation and step-by-step guide in troubleshooting, maintenance and everything else. The firmware is tip top and with end user in mind.

With one roll of PLA, I have managed to print a few from my office work and I am very happy with the result.

At first I was using the fast setting for the print, but then the quality was not really satisfying (hence the term fast).
So Ive changed it to normal, although its taking slightly longer, but the quality is exceptionally better.

The Big Plus

Hands down, its the dual extruder. For complex prints, and with one extruder running the real material and another extruder running the support material (easily removed), it makes complex printing way easier. I used to run a single extruder setup and removing the support material was very hard, since its using the same hard material.

Secondly is the auto levelling of the printer bed. It makes the print failure rate goes lower than any other machine. The printer bed not levelled is the worst nightmare. It can mean bad print base which can accelerate into bad result. The base print have to be tip top and its the level where you have to observe its progress.

These two features to me is a winning factor for Ultimaker 3 and why it is considered the best amongst all.

The Hard Part

Is the converting of files using the slicer software, in this case the recommended software is Cura. It has all the complete settings for the Ultimaker 3 and updates are frequent.

Converting files ready for 3D printing is very tough, especially architectural 3D prints. You got to look at the building and if necessary, to dismantle it and run the printing and assembly process in your head.

Learning as I go

I am still learning as I go on this as every project comes with different types of building design and I have to tackle it in a different way. I must say tho, doing straight skyscrapers are the easiest because it just requires basically a straight up extrusion.

The more complex object is like the one Ive recently completed.
You cant just take the 3D file and send it for printing, unlike what I use to believe back then.

I will do another short review video of it as soon as Im back from Raya holiday this weekend.
Here is the review video I made when the 3D printer just arrived.

More to come!
