Art in the city - Colony Expanse
Art in the city - Colony Expanse
On a visit to the New office building I will be moving to soon, I know I may have said in a post a couple of weeks ago we were moving office well, for a variety of reasons it has been displayed, but that's another story and irrelevant to this post so not sure why I even mentioned it, but that's me my mind races all over the place.
So when I was walking about I passed through Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, which is on 47th Street between 1st and 2nd Ave I came across this art exhibit.

These are two of the hives that are part of an Exhibit on display till the 19th of August called Colony Expanse.
The exhibit is by Art Activist Matthew Willey, and along with a few more shots of the exhibit, I will share what I found out online about the exhibit.

As you can see the two hives are part of 5 of them lined up at this point and I was intrigued by them and if they had any significance, at the time I wondered if it was making some sort of comment on the reduced numbers of bees that are being seen for the last coupleof seasons, but then I turned around and saw....

The gazebo in the Park covered with all these Bee images, which confirmed my initial thoughts

A closer in shot of the Bees on the Gazebo.
Reading about this exhibit, I found there are 193 Hand Painted bees each representing a Member State of the United Nations, which could explain why it is in this park not to far from the United Nations Buildings.

A Statement on the site i found explaining this here states
Bees are crucial for human survival. They do not belong to any race, gender or nationality. They transcend borders and politics. They are everyone's... critical friends.
When honey bees swarm in nature they risk everything. They leave the safety of their hive and enter into the unknown as the precious queen Bee and her hive leap into a state of utter vulnerability for the possibility of expansion. This installation, much like the first phase of a honey bee swarm, is about the potential for change, and the vulnerability and human connection required to achieve it. The bees in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza are essentially hovering in the uncertainty of what comes next.
The intention with this piece is for people around the world to sponsor individual bees so they can travel to the countries they represent when the piece comes down

I really like the art and attention to the diminishing bees that are so crucial to our existence.
Yes I think it makes a great statement
What a great exhibition. We do need to support those honey bees! Interesting hives :)
@birdsinparadise yeah I liked the twist well curves with the hives and loved this exhibit
People just don't realize how dependent we actually are on bees, if the bees end up gone we are pretty much done for ourselves. Good catch on bringing this exhibit to light inside our community. Much appreciated Jay.
@sultnpapper yes you are totally right, we need to start taking care of our planet
Indeed. We need to bee aware.
Nice pictures, too. The hives look like part of a ventilation system, as if air should pass through from bottom to top.
I guess I have to wonder how they will be maintained, too.
@digitalfirehose THis is only a short term display it will be taken down in a week or two
Wow those are some pretty awesome exhibits! The bee one is incredible and such a cool idea.
@mrchef111 yeah on their own they are cool but all as part of one exhibit is such a cool thing to come across
Totally!
