Time To Teach The World How To Toyi-Toyi
Hey Jess-protestors
I often check in on the news around the world just to see what's going on and this story was trending locally about a South African chick trying to get in on a protest in Hong Kong.. All around the world citizens are protesting for rights, or gun laws or whatever it is, there's always something to protest about and stick it to your government right?
As a South African I know freedom isn't free, you have to pay for it, with blood sweat and tears, it just how it is and I thought since we've basically cracked the code on how to do this we should really start outsourcing our expertise to the rest of the world.
I think it would also combat the rampant unemployment in our country, other nations could hire us, fly us over and we rock up with our posters and show you how to get these things done.
What is a Toyi-Toyi?
What the rest of the world calls a protest, we call a toyi-toyi and while you guys bumble around walking in circles shouting some lame-ass hell no we won't go catchphrase, we make it lit.
A toyi-toyi is a dancing protest, simply because we can't do anything without rhythm, we don't know any other way and its accompanied by mass singing, whistling and the occasional brass band or vuvuzela, yes this can be mistaken for a party but in actual fact we're here to have our voices heard.
For a toyi-toyi to be effective it's 10% what the issue is 90% what the songs we made up about it are and off to the races we go. It's also so catchy and energetic you can't help but attract a crowd who are willing to join in if they have nothing better to do or the line to buy airtime is too long might as well get a protest in.

For those of you who can't picture how it's done, it's pretty hard to explain so perhaps this video would do a better job. Toyi Toyi class is in full swing.

If that South African chick really wanted to help that protest she would have thought those Hong Kong peeps how to get in on a proper Toyi-Toyi, haai sies man, shamepies. Where's your sense of Amandla Awetu?
Seriously guys, I feel we're sitting on a gold mine, we need to export toyi-toying as soon as possible.

Alright I will try it out later, my beloved partiko had me at 0sp and all points had vanished I was kinda hoping it was a last gasp and major drama was about to ensue lol..
My vuvuzela is a toy that's kid friendly but it's damn loud.. Anything to regale over some thai beer is always cool with me.. I can only imagine the looks on some people's faces when they see that lil ol skrammyskram made it to bkk to take trolling to the next level.. Though I think they'd be disappointed to learn I'm really docile and harmless. After all I'm only trying to entertain myself with peaceful protest and tender trolling..

In the murky recesses of my brain, I recall there being lessons for folk wanting to learn how to toyi-toy. That third clip of yours is not actually of the toyi-toyi, but rather the pantsula jive or gumboot dance which originated on the mines. When I was involved with the street children movement in Johannesburg in the 80's all our children wanted was gumboots and to dance. Much like the youngster in the video. When the did, it was magical and they were so proud of themselves.
I heard that snip of that South African woman this morning and sighed. Clearly she was traumatised, but what it did, for me, was to point out that grass isn't always greener. I have to say that with all its woes, I am much happier with today's South Africa than the one in which I was a young adult in the 80s.
I think you get what you make of it and if it isn’t greener on the other side it’s because you haven’t enriched yourself through your experience! You need to build character not shelter yourself which is what I think South Africa provides in abundance
For all the things I do bitch about I agree that we’re in a much better place than previous gens! The fact that I can do what I do for a living is proof of that!
Would I like more growth? Ofcourse! Every day I carry my inner toyi-toyi in everything I do!

Ditto, and has, and will probably continue doing so. What folk don't realise is that, other than Guptagate, what's happening here is happening virtually all over the world. Actually, Hong Kong is just a reflection of the world's disaffection with itself....it will pass - eventually.
