Fuel prices in South Africa

in #teamsouthafrica6 years ago

After the recent petrol and diesel fuel price increases, there have been a lot of jokes on social media. Some of the jokes are quite "dodgy". My daughter sent this one to me:

(nothing like the smell of money when eating out)

I just love it. The fuel prices hurt but not much can be done. Since our current government has taken over, lots of taxes have been loaded on to the price. South Africa is defined as a developing nation, that is a bit of an optimistic term. Officially now we are in recession. It is everybody else's fault (of course).

Even though the price of crude oil is lower than in many previous years, prices continue to climb. Obviously our fuel prices are linked to the US Dollar and with all the recent shenanigans with the planned expropriation of land without compensation, the country is being viewed in a dim light.

So I put ZAR 500 diesel fuel into my car on Wednesday. The price per litre is R16.71 and I received 29.92 litres. The petrol price (unleaded fuel) is R17.08 per litre. I live in Gauteng, an inland province, so fuel up here is slightly more expensive than the fuel one can obtain at the coast.

Some comparisons:

In August 2013, unleaded fuel cost R13.55 per litre and Diesel was R12.48 per litre in Gauteng.

In August 2004, unleaded fuel cost R4.00 per litre in Gauteng. Diesel was R3.29 per litre.

Amusingly I found this in a WhatsApp message from 1993 when the ANC sent this stern message to the Nationalist Government.

Yes, things are different when the shoe is on the other foot. Time passes and things are forgotten. This is why I love history so much, people forget and old postures are forgotten.

How silly we all are.

Sort:

It’s good that your people find the strength and patience to joke about it, and in fact many people will cut their budget in something. Life goes on

thats all we can do, until someone strong in charisma gets going in a country. But I can't see how ordinary people can defeat the big American corporates

It looks like prices are rising all over the world, our bread went up yesterday, but the fuel has long surprised no one with its price increase. If you convert 1 liter of 92 gasoline to the US dollar, it costs 85 cents, when in April of this year the price was 70 cents.

so if I take the 85 USD cents and use our exchange rate of say R14.85, your liter of fuel costs = R12.62 in terms of ZAR. So your government is also sticking their greedy fingers into your fuel price.

Usually our country is not so easy to impress with the rising prices of gasoline. The people are accustomed to the fact that this process is irreversible and is subject to its own laws, independent of world prices for raw materials. But in recent months, gas station pricing has been too aggressive - the average growth rate of gasoline and diesel prices has come close to 2% per week. But my country ranks 2nd in oil production:)

clear evidence that those in power have their greedy hands in fuel. ought to be cheaper for you guys.

Day by day every products price are rising. Poor peoples life will be more difficult if it's continue.

I take some experience in your blog.thank you.

One thing can be seen, that if the fuel price increase of petrol and diesel increases, the rent of the vehicle increases but if the prices fall, the rent will not be reduced.

Great post. thanks for sharing this post.i appreciate your life..
