Ulog # 042: Giving a Hand to a Good Cause | Dando una Mano a una Buena Causa

in #teardrops5 years ago

Greeting Uloggers and Steemians
Yesterday, I helped my wife carry out a school project with her 6th graders. She teaches at San Rafael Elementary School, here in Cumaná. They decided to help clean a local beach as a final project for this trimester.

The beach selected was Playa San Luis, in Cumaná. It is one of the most visited beaches in town, and yet one of the most polluted.

We gathered at the school and from there we distributed our volunteers among the parents who have cars.

We arrived at the beach at about 8:30 am and it was almost deserted, except for some guys who were doing some kind of training.

The plan was to distribute the almost 20 students and dozen of parents along a 200 meter section of the beach and pick up as much trash as we could. If the job was well done, the kids would be allowed to swim.

Well, after some 15 minutes, all the kids were in the water.

A few parents, one of my wife's colleagues, my wife, and I kept picking up solid wastes from the sand.

After a couple of hours we were exhausted and no much had been done. This, however, was the third bag we filled.

We call it quits after two hours or so and used the experience as a teaching moment for children and parents to reflect about what it means to commit and to get our hands dirty for a cause we say is worthy.

That section of the beach does look better than before, but more can be done. We need to teach our children that reward follows hard work, not the other way around. Parents should teach by example, so that they don't have to wonder why their kids do not live up to their expectations.

In a moment like the one our country is living, it is important for the next generation of men and women to understand that there is not an expected age to start being responsible citizens. This group of kids have the potential to be more responsible and proactive and raise awareness about what it means to have a clean environment. Maybe next time they'll get more involved and harvest more fun accordingly.

Thanks for your visit!

Congratulations on the initiative! It's always nice to see people who work hard to improve the world!

Thank you. There are people around me doing amazing things and I figure I'd better start participating of that.
Amid this horrible crisis, I have seen some of my university students, young men and women who do not even have a stable job, donating time and talent to poor kids, to the sick and destitute; telling them stories, playing with kids, it is just incredible.
A lot can be done to at least try to make a difference.
I hope to join some of those initiatives soon and post about them.

I see the news every day about what's happening in Venezuela. I am very sorry, I hope you will solve your situation.
Unfortunately, in this historical period the governments of the whole world are going through a dark period... even in Italy we are not happy with the current government.

Yes, it seems we are doomed globally. I said to myself I needed to learn more about italian politics, especially considerng that Italy is the only big player (not associated with russian and chinesepolitics) that keeps supporting Maduro. My guess is they must have some business to protect, but I have no idea what kind of government Mattarella is conducting.

Mattarella has little to do with it.
Politicians who are putting Italy in crisis are the "Lega" and the "Movimento 5 Stelle" that are governing Italy together.
The head of the League is the Minister Matteo Salvini, the head of the other party is Luigi di Maio.
They are two coalitions of populists who are making closure choices, they are blocking investments. Italy, because of them, is entering a recession.
They are both in government but Lega supports Maduro, while Movimento 5 Stelle supports Guaido.
They wage war to get votes and they do not care about the nation!

Mattarella does not have the decision-making powers of the parties that are in government.
Mattarella is a competent person who tries to keep the Italians together, and to make politicians think about the values that the nation must have.
An intelligent person, whom I respect.
His brother was killed by the mafia many years ago, and he is fighting to eliminate it.

I see. Now I understand. I read a bit about Mattarella, read about his brother and his possition about organized crime. That puzzled me, it did not make sense that someone like him would oppose to get rid of criminals like the ones who govern Venezuela (they are worse than the Mafia, at least the mafiosos do not pretend to be something else).
Let's hope Italy finds its way back to prosperity and political balance.
Thanks for the clarification

Thank you, I hope you will solve your problems too.
I have always wanted to visit Venezuela, you deserve a peaceful future!
