Smartphone Smelling Sensor? What's next?

KIT (Karsruhe Institute of Technology) released a prototype sensor for smartphones that can smell things. Of cours it's not even close to what the human nose can smell, it lacks the precision and the variety of smells.Here are a few cool things about this technology wich at the moment isn't even that small for a smartphone ( few centimeters).

Imagine using your phone as a smoke detector, get alerts on your phone when it smells smoke. Maybe even call the Fire Departament if the phone's smoke alarm is note deactivated after 1 minute. Same thing can apply for Gas, electrical cables that are on fire.

Imagine going to the market and you want to buy some fresh meat, you could use the smartphone to see how old the meat is or how fresh, see if it's ok. There is a device that can smell meat, it's not a phone sensor, it's a device that you connect to your smartphone and through an app the "Food Sniffer" can determine if you food is ok to be eaten or not.
If they are able to add the sensor inside the phone it will definitely be a huge improvement and a game changer.

Human nose can distinguish a few smells that are combined, but an improved smelling sensor in the future will probably be able to show you all the smells around even if they are combined.

Maybe even smell the all the ingredients in your food, and tell you if there is something that you are allergic to, inside it.
