A privacy conundrum - What if Siri was a human?

in #technology6 years ago (edited)

Imagine a world in the not to distant future - and Siri/Alexis is run completely by humans. Imagine that Siri is run in a call centre type situation, where humans have access to basically any information you need. How would this change or interactions with our devices, and what implications would this have for privacy? Today I thought I would explore the consequences of this Black Mirror type situations.

Your pocket assistant now is a real human, and has real emotions - how will their responses differ from that of a robot? Imagine if you started asking Siri questions about drug rehab, violence, or suicide - as a human with emotions do you think Siri would have an obligation to step in and offer help - and where is the line drawn between the right for privacy and the interest in keeping people safe? What about criminal activity - does Siri have a responsibility to pass on any information about criminal activity to law enforcement, or is user privacy most important?

Although Siri is smart currently, it is still just a programmed robot and so won't have any of these issues - infact there are lists of funny Siri responses, which show how unhuman like Siri is. As time goes on and technology advances, Siri is becoming more smart and human like in her responses.

Because of the human element, Siris emotions could get in the way and could start offering advice and answers which could have dire consequences for the user. Imagine if users started to ask Siri for life advice and relationship advice. In this case should there be any responsibility and liability forced upon Siri?

With technology, there is always the chance of corruption - imagine if there were corrupt/criminals working for Siri. They could gain unsuspecting users trust, and scam them in a number of different ways. Most apps these days have permission to all sorts of things on your device, such as your messages, photos and more - whos to stop a corrupt Siri employee from hacking any of this data. Unfortunately this probably already happens from other apps trying to steal peoples identity from time to time.

A humans right to privacy

From the user end I know that if Siri was a real person it would affect the way I used it (if I used it at all!). It was also make me start to question whether other devices/services are listening in and run by humans as well. Currently humans have a right to privacy, but this might not always be the case. With the recently scandal and fallout of the Facebook data leaking scandal it can be seen that it is becoming harder and harder to keep your data safe.

There has been talk in the past, and speculation that services like Facebook messenger are recording all of our private conversations. This wouldn't come as a complete surprise to me - I am using Facebook less and less these days, but the advertisements are becoming more and more accurate - so where are they getting this data from? Facebook does actually track your web information, even when you aren’t logged in, so this could explain it.

If this was ever found to be true - that Facebook was spying on us there would be a mass exodus from these services. But where would they all go? If Siri/Alexis were run by humans and Messenger was recording our conversations then how could we have private conversations? I think alot of people would move to privacy browsers such as TOR, and look for decentralised communication tools. Who know we might even see a resurgence of the old fashioned telephone!?

Although this is all hypothetical, it is something that could happen in the not too distant future - what are your thoughts on this? How would your relationship with your devices change if you knew there was a real chance that people were listening in to your conversations?

That is extremely mind-blowing and scary to fathom. Wouldn't be surprised to see that in 5 years. @conradt

A fascinating topic of speculation, but isn't reality moving faster? Social media already offer help when users have suicidal thoughts. For example, Zooko Wilcox received a mental support message when he tweeted: "I think I might choose this hill to die on just because I want to die", which he meant figuratively ('this hill' was allowing ASICS to mine Zcash). There's a similar message for anorexic kids on Tumblr, which I read about years ago, and Facebook is actually using AI to detect suicidal content.

In a sense, Facebook is indeed spying on us, so much that they don't need to listen to us talking.

Imagine if users started to ask Siri for life advice and relationship advice. In this case should there be any responsibility and liability forced upon Siri?

No, because humans who give life and relationship advice aren't held liable for a wrong judgement call either.

Yeah it really does make you think - we really are starting to live in the future!

I didnt realise Facebook spied on us so much - its a bit scary really!

Thanks for the awesome comment @edb

well.. if our pocket assisstant is human it woild actually be good and bad.
good because it would understand how we feeling qt a time.
and bad because it would react to us according to how he or she is feeling at the moment, and is prone to corruption and spying on us.
Beautifully penned sir @conradt.

Yeah agreed @rabiujaga it could be good and also bad - it really depends who is on the other side of the machine...

From what I've heard about China they could probably do this.
Manpower is definitely not their weakness.

Yeah maybe they are already working on it!

What if zelda was a girl?

I think this one was lose on me lol I never played the game so I missed the joke?

I could see the possibility of an AI forwarding those difficult and complex situations to a real human or offering that as a choice. I was reading about Minecraft the other day and did not realize this but Microsoft employs over half of the Minecraft budget toward moderators and customer help. This is because the primary audience is children and it is an MMO - so Microsoft feels obliged to moderate and keep the content safe (and I don't blame them). So this is a big example of when you do need real humans to moderate content. Although some may think an AI could effectively moderate I don't think we are there yet.

Does this concern me about privacy with the advancements in AI and the possibility of a human listening in? Well, I've assumed that a human is going to see my digital footprint for a long time. I speculate that services that allow a user to share in the profits of how their data is used will outwin the current models - which are all just take take take. These companies rationalized that their "service" is just so great and awesome that we, the users, will freely give over data to use their fantastic service. Thing is, more people are realizing their data is actually more valuable than these crappy companies are trading it for. Companies will need to offer much more in return for the data I think and as a result they will be obliged to protect that data since they "paid" so much for it and will treat it more carefully. Just a thought. Sorry for the ramble.

YEah its all getting a bit to real for me at times! Hard to tell these days whos listening in and recording etc and what they are using our data for... Yeah I reckon there is loads of data out there about me - wish I knew this 5 years back!

Yes at the end of the day the way FB/Google etc remain free is due to advertising and the mass ammounts of data they keep on us and sell on to marketing companies. I dont see Facebook as a social media company anymore, but rather the worlds largest marketing company - and we are the product!

It scares me a bit if I may say.😬

Me to - the future is a scary place!
