The latest 14 year old tech...

in #technology5 years ago

We all know technology moves quickly and that it's almost futile trying to keep up; Attempting to stay up-to-date will often just lead to financial stress and probably disappointment; Even as we un-box our latest tech there's new models hitting the stores, or so it seems and therefore the excitement and enjoyment out of having the latest and greatest it diminished, if not ruined all together.

Back in 2005 I purchased some camera equipment: A Canon EOS 400D, Canon 90-300mm lens and a Sigma 10-20mm lens as well. Those items cost me a lot of money at the time and whilst I didn't use them daily they served their purpose. It helped that they were tax deductible purchases and so looking back I consider the purchase sensible and it has served its purpose over many years.

Fast forward 14 years and my expensive purchase is worth significantly less. Almost nothing in fact.

I decided to move these items on and have listed them on eBay for sale. I haven't sold anything there for a long time so I was a little slow getting through the process but I got there in the end. I did their 7-day-auction option and started the opening bids at a very low figure after researching what's on the site for sale currently and past selling-prices. I will lose a significant amount of money if the items sell.

I haven't used this equipment for a long time hence the sale and I figured I'd rather see them head off to a new home and use by someone who appreciated the equipment, and having purchased it at a reasonable price. In my mind some aspiring photographer, a kid maybe, will buy them and make great use of them and be pleased to have purchased my equipment at a great price...I can almost see the amazing photo's that kid will take, maybe award-winners? That's the ideal. In reality it's likely the items won't sell and I'll be stuck with them in which case they'll sit around and do nothing, I'll throw them away or just give them to someone.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the equipment won't sell because who want's old camera equipment these days? What possible value could something like this have? I mean it's not even brand new! That's the way it is these days right? Things become obsolete so quickly and marketers expertly condition us to feel that if what we have isn't the very latest we are substandard people, not living life to the fullest or simply missing out on something. We are conditioned to want only the latest and greatest and so items like my camera equipment will possibly go unwanted.

I'm not one to change things over because a marketer tells me I need the latest version and mostly only buy something when I need it rather than when I want it. I also try to ensure that things I no longer need, or are no longer able to perform to my needs, are moved on to be utilised by someone else, case in point, my camera equipment.

I'm hoping my stuff sells, not for the money really, more because I want my stuff to head off somewhere it might do some good...That struggling kid-photographer I mentioned above maybe? I was contemplating offering it for sale on steem, you know, pack it off to someone for the price of some SBD + postage or something...We'll see how it goes I guess. Probably I'll just give it away if it doesn't sell.

Not familiar with Canon stuff, but if you get stuck without a buyer, head into the camera house in the central markets. They buy / sell second hand camera gear and serve pro's on a regular basis. You may not get a lot of money, but you'll get a fair assessment of what it is worth if you then want to move it quickly.

They can alternatively sell it on consignment for you. :)

I just gave it to a friend of mine, for nothing. She'll appreciate it. Thanks though.

If it has served it's purpose you got your value from it and if you do sell it that's a bonus.

Agreed, and as I've decided to give to a friend instead of sell it I have the benefit that comes from showing generosity as well. :)

Perfect 👍

I think it is an excellent camera for photography. It has 10 Megapixel. But maybe not so much for videography. Anyway, good luck for selling it.

Yes, 14 years ago technology was different I suppose.

I'm in the market for a camera... And have a limited budget... Maybe we should talk on Discord.

I think you'll find the cost of shipping would be cost preventative. You would probably be able to find similar locally. There's loads on ebay.

Good point!

There’s an eBay equivalent on steem I’m pretty sure. Maybe you could list it there if eBay doesn’t work out for you?

I usually like to buy the highest spec thing I can afford at the time. Then I sit on that til it breaks or in the case of my computers til they start slowing down then I start looking for a new one. Totally do not understand people who grab at the latest and greatest because it’s the latest and greatest 🤨

I've decided to give it all to a colleague at work who has been trying to get a camera for a while but can't afford it. I'm sure she'll really appreciate it.

I occasionally look around for lenses because a good lens is a good lens if looked after. The 10-20 might sell because a lot may want but not be able to justify retail price.

To be honest I think I'm going to give it all to a friend. She has been after something for a while and I might as well help her out.

yeah, it is not a bad option and if she gets into it, buying canon body upgrades the whole kit as the lenses will be fine.

Yeah, she struggles week to week and I decided today that she need my equipment more than I need the couple hundred bucks selling it would get me.

Yeah, it is kind of a bummer to get something and find out it is obsolete before you have even used it because the next one is already out.

I do not tend to do early adoption of something if I already have an older, working version. Sometimes I miss out on things because of this, but that is the way it goes sometimes.

Missing out on the latest tech isn't a problem...There'll be another one out within minutes so the last model will be in sale...3 minutes after hit hit the market. 🥴

Aye, getting one model older at one-third the cost is sometimes the way to go.

I have no problem buying second hand stuff, its a lifestyle I embrace as I don't see the need to jeep buying new when there's so much out there still in good nick. If I was any closer I would have taken it off your hands double time quick quick. Not sure whether my ZAR currency would allow me to afford it 😭😅💱 but one can dream. It looks like some pretty decent camera gear and even as a hobbyist amateur photographer I can appreciate it from afar. Imagine this. I'm still using a Canon 1000d ten mp camera from years back with no proper lenses. It pains me but it's life. Good luck and I hope it sells.

Yeah, many people just have to get the latest and greatest. Some need it, some don't.

I ended up giving the equipment to a girl at work yesterday. She's pretty pleased as she doesn't have the money to buy it herself. She said she'll pay me but I haven't told her a figure and neither will I. It was a gift.

I use my phone (Samsung S9) most these days but have a Panasonic TZ110 as well. I'm a poor photographer at best so expensive equipment is wasted on me.

Awesome gesture. I'm jealous of the girl at your work. 😂 Not many people will do that for you but I've been blessed by people like that too in the past and have tried to pay it forward too whenever I can. Awesomeness and a kind act.

I have a give without expectation ethos generally and for those who warrant it I show generosity.
