When most people think of virtual reality, they probably think of gaming. And while it's true that most VR applications are created with gaming in mind, other use cases are slowly emerging from companies around the world.

One such company is Gjensidige Insurance - an insurance company based out of Norway.

An unlikely player in the world of virtual reality, this Nordic insurance firm is has brought something unique to the table: users can now experience childbirth before it actually happens.

The experience lasts only ten minutes, but it offers an over-the-shoulder view of childbirth from the mother's perspective. The presumption is that having a quick "rehearsal" of childbirth will desensitize first time mothers from the intense emotional experience that comes with givingbirth.

Kristina Muller, Chief Midwife at Stockholm hospital, had this to say about the project:

[This new virtual reality experience] has the power to make people really understand what actually happens when a child is born."

Other interesting applications of virtual reality have emerged recently as well. Some doctors have found that it can help patients manage their anxiety, while others have used it for pain management through breathing exercises.
