Why AI Will Be The Beginning of The End of Video Evidence

In the past few decades, if there is one field that has seen unimaginable progress, it has to be that of the computer and everything it encompasses. I shudder when I think about how the world would be without computers. Of course we would manage, like we were doing before but the differences with and without are staggering.

From being as large as buildings to now comfortably sitting on our wrists, computers have become extremely powerful and small. From being isolated systems to a global network, they have enabled a sort of a hivemind. And now we have artificial intelligence which allows us to do so many different mind-boggling things that put the uninformed, in a state of disbelief.

From making cars autonomous, to aiding in healthcare, finance, economics, military activities, security systems, video games, composing music, making art, in our phones as virtual assistants, AI is everywhere today and has already started augmenting human life which is reassuring.

However, there have also been some really bizarre use cases and some really nefarious ones as well that will scare you and make you have second thoughts about the future of humanity itself. Take for example the case of deepfakes, that will not only cause unfortunate situations for many but could also be the end of video evidence!

What Is Real Anymore?

Watch this video above and I'm sure you will rub your eyes to make sure that what you're watching is actually happening. This is a deepfake video which basically means that one person's face is being swapped with someone else's in a way that it looks very real. The same can be done with photos as well.

In the video, popular actor and comedian Bill Hader is being interviewed by Conan. He then proceeds to do an impersonation of another actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and when he begins, his face is replaced by Arnold's in the video and you can't even tell it's happening until it has happened.

The face then changes back to Bill Hader's and then again to Arnold's several times during the video. The video was uploaded by YouTube user "Ctrl Shift Face" and he credits "iperov" on GitHub for its creation. Apparently the deepfake was made using a software called DeepFaceLab.

I have to say this looks both super cool and creepy at the same time. It's fun having the capability of doing this because there can be several viable use cases for entertainment purposes but it could also be used for some really heinous things.

When video can be edited as convincingly as this, it could really spell the end of video evidence in court because we just wouldn't be sure about their authenticity. Right now they can be reverse engineered to determine whether they are real or not, but that won't last forever. It's going to be really difficult to prove or disprove something in the future.
