Would root your phone in 2018? according to the improvements in technology and with many manufactures coming on board with different experiences in their phones, would you? and why would you?
What is rooting?

Rooting is a process that allows you to attain root access to the Android operating system code (the equivalent term for Apple devices id jailbreaking). It gives you privileges to modify the software code on the device or install other software that the manufacturer wouldn't normally allow you to.

Basically manufactures limit the functionalities of their phones or they over do it in adding on the functionality of their smartphones.
About a year ago i was owning a rooted samsung galaxy s7 with a custom Rom installed. it was a greater experience than the same unrooted phone i used to own.
Rooting gives you the freedom to add or remove some features from your phone or even give your phone a new whole software look, but more on that later.
But we go through the whole rooting experience, we should know why people root their devices.
Why root your android phone

Under all circumstances we sometimes find reasons why we should root our phones.
-To Install custom roms(rooting gives the privilege to finally change your software entirely and usually this helps to solve some problems with the original manufactures's software that came with the phone.)
It could solve performance issues, where by the software makes the phone to run so slow in which a custom and clean ROM can improve on the performance massively.
Actually every time i rooted my phone the main reason was to install a custom new almost stock Rom that could run so smoothly getting rid of some manufacture's skins that most times have alot of unnecessarily duplicate applications that i rarely use.
Also by installing custom Roms that add alot of features that allow to the customization of your phones from installing themes that even now are no longer supported in the latest build of android.
With custom roms you can change the overall look of your phone by customizing just about everything in it like the status bar, setting menus, launcher icons, and so on.

-Flash custom files into your system software, for example you can flash a new radio if your current radio is bad at picking signals, you can flash kernels and theme functionality.

-Underclock your CPU.
one big reason some root their phones is to under-clock their processor. Usually this is done by reducing on the clock speed of the cpu to in most cases improve on the battery life. Actually to an average consumer, it's a fact that high end phones pack alot of power that sometimes compromise on the battery life, reducing on the amount of power your processor takes can massively increase on your battery life without affecting the overall performance of the phone. underclocking a phone from a 2.4ghz to a 2.0ghz can make it run alot cooler and much less harsh to the battery life. I once underclocked my lg g2 from 2.26ghz to 1.8ghz which drastically improved on the phones already fantastic battery life to last me for almost two days with average use. Not forgetting that some battery managing apps like greenify can do wonders if they are granted the root access of the phone.

-Unlocking phone's features;
We all know how some manufactures in conjunction with the carrier providers lock some phones's features making it impossible to use them unless a root that is always required. for example buying a phone that can't set up a hotspot.

-one major and probably one of the greatest reasons to root your phone is to receive the latest updates of android. I understand about owning a Samsung galaxy s6 in 2018 and that phone is still a fast phone even to today's standards but one big problem would be in the software support that Samsung is unable to give to it in 2018 and beyond. So it's pretty easy for one to install a custom Rom based on the latest build of android let's say android P and so on.

why you shouldn't root your android phone
-If you have enough money to buy the latest and the greatest phones. Technically it would better to just purchase a new great phone fast phone with a great battery if all you want in a phone is performance and not the bell and whistles, customizations and colors. some people just want enduring fast phones to get things done and maybe it's you.

-If you are afraid of losing your warranty,
this has always been a concern for most people trying to root their newly purchased phones where by they are afraid if their manufacturer stops supporting their devices in form of software updates, security patches and hardware replacement in case of failure. However this is something that can fixed by simply unrooting your device and back to the stock manufacture's firmware.

-If you already own a phone with enough features and good amount of customization and most importantly regular updates. I own a one plus 5t and ever since i never used a custom rom again, or rooted it even if they allow rooting of it. it has just enough customization and speed for all my needs. So maybe your phone does just that for you, then you wouldn't go through the hustle of rooting your phone.

-It's risky, you could temporarily damage your phone or worse still, permanently brick it. if the flashing ever goes wrong, you could flash a wrong file on a wrong phone, And, some refurbished phones are hard to root and flash so you could be owning one and end up damaging it forever.
it's better you go through some research about before attempting to root and flash any file on your phone. There is a lot of it out there on the internet.

-Some bootloaders are hard to unlock, for example some lg bootloaders that would make it hard to unlock and flash any recovery image.

But it's 2018, why would you bother rooting your phone?

phones have become more faster, battery life has improved.
Processors are more efficient and power friendly.
There are more phones without bloatware like the essential phones, pixel phones, one plus, Razer phone, so in case you wanted a clean android experience, there you are.

Personally the only reason i would root a phone is to maybe get rid of the bloatware in my Samsung, Huawei or Lg phone. Incase you fancy such features it's all there for you as these phones ares till fast regardless of the software bloatware in them.

Otherwise if you still want extremely more features, ridiculous flexibility and customization of your phone, then you would root your phone and do something about it.

Is rooting even a thing nowadays? I agreed with most of the point that you have pointed out in the article. Nowadays, the mobile phone has become much faster and sophisticated so my personal opinion, rooting seems unnecessary.
