About

Gotham is an American crime drama television series developed by Bruno Heller that was based on characters published by DC Comics. It premiered on Fox on September 2014 and is currently in its 4th season. It originally follows James Gordon's early days with the Gotham City Police Department but branched off to include the Bruce Wayne character and several villains in the series.

Thoughts

As someone who haven't watched any Batman-related stuff before, I don't know exactly what to expect after someone recommended me to watch this tv series. Off the top of my head, I expected it to be one of those cliche good vs evil stories wherein the good guys always wins in the end. After watching a couple of episodes, I was somewhat wrong and it was definitely more than that.

Gotham follows the story of Detective James Gordon, a new recruit for the Gotham City Police Department and his veteran partner in the police force, Harvey Bullock. It all started after Gordon was involved in the affairs of the crime families that somewhat ruled the City of Gotham in the shadows.

I have to admit that I find the first season of the show kind of boring. All the power play between the crime family leaders and their subordinates where fun to watch at first but immediately loses its touch after many many betrayals. What made me stick to the show though was the actors acting and portrayal of their characters, especially the Penguin. The Penguin was the main reason why I didn't dropped the show as I find his character and storyline interesting.

And Thank God I didn't because starting Season Two things start to spice up. With the introduction of more interesting villains, we were introduced to a world of bloodshed and total anarchy. The overall atmosphere of the show started to change to a more "Batman"y feeling(I haven't even watched Batman before and I get this feeling). The whole "good vs evil" concept starts to kicks in and was enjoyable to watch.

What made Gotham fun to watch was its characters. Almost all of them are build up with just the right amount of time. The pacing and introduction of each new character is amazingly well done that it does not leave any space for confusion. Most characters are also given enough background stories that will make us feel connected and even sympathetic to them.

My biggest concern on the show though is that it seems like no one ever dies in Gotham (with a very few exception of some minor characters). No matter how fatal the wound or damage they take, somehow they still manage to survive. Which kinda defeats the purpose of building up a characters emotional connection to the audience when we the audience knows that this character will not die and will still make an appearance in the next episode.

As for the plot and background story of each character, while I am not sure what part is their idea or what is based on the DC comics, it is good, most of the plot makes sense(except the whole not dying thing). The problem with shows with a lot of villains and characters is how to give each character an ample amount of screen time, to which was amazingly solved by Gotham by making some villains somewhat alternately work for the good guys. Gotham also has a lot of anti-hero which was a nice touch. Overall, Gotham is a very entertaining tv series to watch even if this is your first Batman related stuff series.
