Did it ever occur to you that if people are fascinated while standing in front of some piece of art, they might say afterwards: "the painting was looking at me."
The viewers background with all its memories delivers the information that he puts into the interpretation of the art and I guess that's why they stare at each other like hypnotized.
The art plays music with the inner cords of the viewers past and this is also described as
"love at first sight".
