For the Alliance - Day 120 - Daily Haiku - My Application to join The Alliance

For the Alliance:
Here is my application.
Thank you for your time.

(Doesn't everyone start their application with a haiku?) ;-)

"How did you find #thealliance?''

As it happens, in the five or so months I've been here on Steemit, a number of the people I have followed and interacted with have turned out to be members, and since they are among my favorite Steemians, it seemed a natural progression to join ranks.

"Why do you want to be here?''

I've long believed that we can accomplish a great deal more by working together than we can separately, which has been borne out in my personal and professional lives, as well as in my volunteer efforts.

As just one example, I spent several years with my former spouse, racing our Morgan sailboat in and around St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida, and if ever a sport required a high level of precision teamwork, it's sailboat racing. It also teaches a great deal of focus and discipline, as tacking (changing direction) under racing conditions, particularly in heavy winds, requires split-second timing, in order to gain or maintain the lead over your competitors.

My mother got me into volunteer organizations as a teen, and I've volunteered for various causes close to my heart ever since. Little wonder that I wound up in the Volunteer State. ;-)

As a direct result, I've served on the Boards of Directors for one trade organization and several nonprofits, none of which would have worked as well or as smoothly, without the efforts of the entire team.

One person can accomplish a lot, but multiple perspectives are nearly always a positive influence, and can point the way to new connections and possibilities that might not have otherwise been noticed, not to mention helping us each to grow and to learn while we are trying to accomplish the stated goals.

I have had some amazing teachers in my life, and I feel strongly that this is my time to give back to others in a similar way, as repayment in small part for what I have learned and experienced. By helping others we help ourselves. Every time.

"What qualities do you have that would make you a valued member of the family?''

I work and play well with others, I have long been known among friends, family and co-workers as a natural peacemaker, and I rarely run with scissors. ;-)

I am a published author, in print and online, since 1999. Thanks to my parents, I have an excellent working vocabulary and use of English, and have been called on by a number of people over the years to help them with their writing, as I am a natural proofreader.

I'm also a natural empath, and people look to me as a confidant or counselor, and have done so since I was a teen. As I've posted about before, I am commonly approached by people I've never even met, who proceed to give me their life story in exceeding detail, and even they are perplexed as to why they are doing so with a complete stranger.

It has been happening for long enough that I am no longer surprised by it, and do my best to simply listen without judgment, as that usually seems to be what is most needed in the moment. And if someone tells that what they are telling me is in confidence, I keep their confidence, and do not break their trust. It is what I would want in their place.

Although I spent my first few weeks on Steemit getting my bearings, and not posting much, I then took up @brokemancode's 30-Day Haiku Challenge, and since haiku is one of my favorite writing forms, and I've been reading and writing them since childhood, I decided to continue it as a daily post.

These are not typically short posts; my seventeen syllable haikus are usually accompanied by a thousand to fifteen hundred words or more of context and commentary.

Last night's post (well, okay, early this morning) was Day 119, and this post also counts as Day 120, so I have been disciplined enough to post daily for four months now, and plan to continue for the foreseeable future.

I typically post more than one post daily, though for the past several weeks my husband has been ill, so I've just been making the one post. But he is on the mend, and I will be posting more frequently again, on a wide range of subjects.

I grew up in a multilingual neighborhood, have no issues with being the only person in a group who doesn't speak whatever language is being spoken, and have gotten very good at discerning meaning when working with others for whom English is not their first language.

I have already helped several people on Steemit in this regard, primarily through comments when it seemed clear that, due to a language barrier, they were saying something other than what they were trying to say, and I have offered suggestions to assist in clarifying their message.

I also offer spelling and grammar suggestions, though I make it clear that they are only suggestions, as I am not a perfect writer myself, and have occasionally posted a blog post with an error that I had to go back and correct later. Hey, we're all human, after all. I will continue to offer assistance where I can.

Writing has played a role in the majority of professional positions I have held, including a stint as the Administrator of a small publishing company based in Largo, Florida, where I frequently did double duty as proofreader and editor.

I've amassed a lot of knowledge in my years on the planet, and thanks to my own wide-ranging interests, I have knowledge in a number of different areas.

So a large part of my purpose for writing is to pass along the knowledge I've gained, in order to prevent it from being lost, and to help those who will take up the pen long after I am gone.

Writing is also one of my great passions, and the primary reason why I joined Steemit was to build an audience for my work, and to build a network of diverse but cooperative individuals, that we might work in concert to make the Steemit experience, not to mention the world as a whole, better for us all.

So I was ready for The Alliance before I even knew that The Alliance existed. Is the Alliance ready for me?

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for membership in The Alliance.

I look forward to your response, and to getting more involved. And bonus . . . I even live close to Nashville!

Please note @enginewitty that I attempted to respond to your invitation to the Discord channel, but got a message that the invitation had expired, so if someone could post a working link to the channel in the comments I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you.

Melaleuca, a company that has been making natural, eco-friendly

chemically laden versions from the supermarket,
but are safer, and typically save money overall in addition.

I was introduced to them by a co-worker in 1990, lost track
of them, and was thrilled to find them again about a year
and a half ago. I strongly recommend their products.

All words and images are my own.

I took this photo in September 2012, of the hummingbirds on our front porch, probably using my Canon SX30iS camera, which could just as easily have been taken today.
They are demanding little critters, and have no fear of getting in my face to let me know when they need fresh nectar. ;-)

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.

Resteeming is welcome, you may link to my post from your own website or blog, and you may use excerpts and/or images as long as you credit me, and link back to this post.

Your 17-syllable haikus "are usually accompanied by a thousand to fifteen hundred words or more of context and commentary" - that's what I love most about them!
You're nott already a member of #thealliance? I thought you were. @Byn recently applied, then I did. How/when do we find out if we're "in' with all the cool people of The Alliance?

Thanks, @carolkean!

No idea, on @thealliance. I've been meaning to apply for a while, but just hadn't gotten to the application, with the press of other things. But I kept running into authors I loved who were members, so it seemed a natural fit, and I'm guessing it was similar for you and @byn.

They just had a Nashville meetup this past weekend, and after I read a post that it had been turned into an open meetup, I inquired a couple of times regarding location, since it's about an hour and a half from me. But I was pretty much met with a blank wall, so I guess I'm not one of the cool kids yet, and we find out when we find out. ;-)

I thought you were already a member as well, so there you go - yet another commonality. This is starting to get comical. ;-)
