No veo, no oigo, no hablo. Ese es el mensaje que transmiten estos pequeños monos de cierto tallado famoso. Un mensaje que puede ser interpretado de diferentes formas.

Los nombres de estos monos son: Mizaru, Kikazaru e Iwazaru .

Dejaré al lector la tarea de averiguar quién es quién, pero les adelantaré que mi reflexión de hoy la basaré en el último de estos tres: Iwazaru (el que no habla) .

Muchos interpretan a este como la idea de evitar expresar los malestares personales, o evitar hablar cosas injustas e inapropiadas. Yo pisaré un poco más delante de esa línea y diré que transmite la idea de que es mejor callarse que abrir la boca para comunicar ideas hipócritas y mentirosas.

Quizá nos ha ocurrido que por cortesía saludamos a alguien a quien en verdad no nos agrada ver en ese momento. La cortesía está bien, no es correcto hacer un gesto grosero solo por nuestra forma personal de ver el mundo. Debemos recordar que los demás tienen también sus propias formas personales de ver las cosas.

Pero exagerar los sentimientos conlleva engañar a los demás. Decir: “¡Hola, mi apreciado y estupendo amigo!” cuando en verdad no sentimos eso, es burlarnos de esa otra persona.

En ese caso sería mejor ser como Iwazaru y mantener los labios bien tapados.

Desde luego decir un discreto y conciso “hola” no significa que se odie a alguien, pero suele ser más sincero que usar expresiones altisonantes que en realidad no sentimos.

Por otra parte, cuando si tenemos un aprecio genuino y profundo por alguien, es recomendable hacérselo saber. En esos casos si vale mucho usar frases de interés personal que aviven la amistad.

En ocasiones quizá sea mejor aplicar la técnica de los otros dos monos: no ver ni oír. Todo dependerá de las situaciones y el entendimiento que cada cual quiera darle a esta interesante estatuilla japonesa de los llamados tres monos sabios.

I will step a little further in front of that line and say that it conveys the idea that it is better to be silent than to open your mouth to communicate hypocritical and lying ideas.

Perhaps it has happened to us that out of courtesy we greet someone we really don't like to see at that moment. Courtesy is fine, it's not right to make a rude gesture just because of our personal way of seeing the world. We must remember that others also have their own personal ways of seeing things.

But exaggerating feelings leads to deceiving others. To say, "Hello, my dear and great friend," when we really don't feel that, is to make fun of that other person.

In that case it would be better to be like Iwazaru and keep your lips well covered.

Of course, saying a discreet, concise "hello" doesn't mean you hate someone, but it's usually more sincere than using high-flown expressions that you don't really feel.

On the other hand, when we have a genuine and deep appreciation for someone, it is advisable to let them know. In those cases it is worthwhile to use phrases of personal interest that enliven friendship.

Sometimes it may be better to apply the technique of the other two monkeys: not seeing or hearing. Everything will depend on the situations and the understanding that each one wants to give to this interesting Japanese statuette of the so-called three wise monkeys.
