Theater Night Out 8 : School of Rock at Gillian Lynne Theatre, West End London

in #theater6 years ago

Being a huge theater fan, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to see a musical when I recently went to London.

When you think musical two places immediately come to mind. Broadway and West End. Broadway is a little bit far off, but whenever I visit London I always see a musical. This time wasn’t an exception, so I was excited to go and see the “School of Rock” musical at Gillian Lynne Theatre. Having a rock theme was the reason I chose it over others that I hadn't seen.

School of Rock is a rock musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Julian Fellowes, it is based on the 2003 film of the same name. The musical made its West End debut at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on November 14, 2016. The Gillian Lynne Theatre is an impressive building at Covent Garden that recently was renamed by a famous British actress.

The story is about Dewey Finn, an out-of-work rock singer and guitarist who pretends to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. After identifying the musical talent in his students, Dewey forms a band of fifth-graders, in an attempt to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands contest.

Of course, the story will not win a realism award, but who really cares. For two and a half hours you are immersed into the its magical world and have the fun of your life. And I don’t care if you are kid, teenager or adult. The fun is still the same.

As one would expect the performances of all the actors are awesome. They are like a well-oiled machine, a perfectly tuned band. Pun indented, thank you. I was particularly impressed by the kids. At such young age they performed to the maximum, without any noticeable flaws. They are all extremely talented and disciplined to pull this thing of. They play and sing and dance.

Moreover direction is awesome, choreography is awesome , lights and sound is awesome. There is live band playing the music and as it was proudly stated all the kids play their instruments live on stage. I didn’t notice otherwise.

I thought I would hear a lot of classic rock tunes, but it wasn’t the case. All the music is original and written by Andrew Lloyd Weber. The soundtrack is great in the classic rock genre.

By now you must have guessed that it was awesome and I had great fun. And while I was enjoying it I managed to sneak few photos. Yes, I was in the first row. I strongly suggest you to watch a musical in London. The tickets are quite expensive, but it’s worth every penny. Do it at least once in your life.

That was from me.

Glad you had an awesome night. I've seen a few shows in the past. Starlight Express was my fave.

The one I want to see is The Book of Mormon, which is supposed to be very funny.

Last two times I went to London I wanted to go to Book of Mormons. but I chose "Rock of Ages" and "School of Rock". Third time the charm, unless I find another rock-themed musical. :)

Well, there's always "We Will Rock You" - The Queen musical.

not a big queen fan...

It looks like a good night ouf! Im honestly not too big of a fan on musicals and so but this would be one Id actually go to!

xaxaxa...Επίσης να πεις.. 😀

I love theatre as well, unfortunately I live in a country where Musical Theatre culture is not as big as on Broadway or West End haha. I remember watching School of Rock's live performance on the 2015 Tony Awards (I think, maybe it was 2014) and I thought the children were amazing. This play has a very special energy, I'm sure I'd like to see it live.

Musical is very difficult because you have to be good both at acting and singing. I have seen some pretty mediocre musicals here in Greece and I would say that you either do it right or don't do it at all.
Where are you from ?

It is a very difficult thing to do, it also takes a lot of work and it is incredibly hard to find someone who excels at singing, acting AND dancing. I am currently training on the three things and I feel there's soooo much I need to learn to be able to consider myself "good" haha. But yeah, mediocre plays are everywhere. I believe you have to start somewhere and work your way up to better things. I'm from Venezuela, our musical theatre culture is limited. We've had a few big musicals here but it's not nearly as big as on Broadway.

Wish you all the best. It takes time and persistence. And a lot of practice. :)

Thank you so much!

I'm very, very glad that you liked it, and you enjoyed the rock musical.

Thank you . It was great. :)
