The Beast Has Made It To Our Little Piece Of Heaven. A Few Things Left To Do!

in #theinnerblocks5 years ago

As most of you know we have been working on a project for the last two weeks. It has been a long two weeks with long days but it has been good. Today was a milestone in that project. We are doing some experimenting with various ways of building on our property. Many of you know it is AirCrete and some Cob building.

We were going in five directions at once and it was getting overwhelming, as most of you understand this, we had to pinpoint one obstacle and finish that and move to the next one. If we continued going in all the directions at once then we would get nothing done. So we started with cob because it would get a structure built faster on the property and with AirCrete we would have to build molds for the blocks, pour the molds, pull the blocks from molds, and let them cure some. We would have to do this many times and then build our houses. With cob, we would make the cob as we went along and build faster. We will do AirCrete but it will be a later project.

The problem we ran into was how were we going to get the materials we needed to our property, the sand, clay, and gravel for the foundation that was needed to build with cob. We have been trying to use the method of reuse, repair, and rebuild in our thinking for our little piece of heaven. We came up with this, a friend was going to take this to the recycling yard.

!973 Chevrolet C-60 Dump Truck

It needed brakes, master cylinder and, a vacuum booster (the vacuum booster we will have to order and install when resources become available) and the carburetor rebuilt also needed some small things done to it. (Bulbs changed and wiring to get lights working.) We were looking at $350.00 per load we had hauled in by someone else and the sand, gravel and, clay pits here are only about 10 to 20 miles round trip for us. The first loads would have been over a $1000.00 to start this going. We can do it cheaper fixing this truck up and hauling it in myself. The parts took a while to find and some were expensive but still cheaper than having the materials hauled in by a hauling company. We also learned something from working on this vehicle which also makes us more self-reliant, so it is a win-win situation. We will need this when it comes time to get our garden in as we can get wholesale compost by the truckload cheap and haul it to the property.

C-60 Dump Truck

It is not pretty by no means but it is a great little truck. It has a 292 inline 6 cylinder engine in it and is a 4-speed transmission. It runs great just been sitting for quite a few years. I will be able to haul about three tons of material at a time. It is rated to haul 5 tons but smaller loads are easier and the pits are so close there is no need to push the truck. So we now have our little beast on our little piece of heaven. I hope everyone has a great night/day and a greater tomorrow.

That's a nice old truck you have there! It has the look of a 1970s vintage Chevy, from what I can see of it. The 292 straight six is a good motor with plenty of torque. It's certainly no speed demon, but it'll get the job done.

1973 Chevy C-60. Working on getting all the little things done. It has some quirks but it has sat up for quite a while. I like the straight six motors. They are workhorses!
