Dog walk diaries: The contributor life of abundance

As many know, my dad was an artist and a talented one at that. It was a hard life to live as it required a great deal of manual labour and it wasn't just the painting, the selling was handled by the artist also and it rarely paid well. This is why fire my father, he was also a teacher but, always introduced himself as an artist first.

The way the world was back then, the chances of making it were slim, the chance of living off passion work was slimmer again. The world is changing though and the 'job for life' life has ended. Going forward, we have less opportunity of security as employees due to technological advancement and must find new ways to keep ourselves fed but perhaps more importantly, new ways to find meaning in life.

There are going to be support structures set up like universal basic incomes, but they are not going to satisfy our human desires for purpose and advancement. As a society, most of us haven't been satisfied for a long time but die to financial needs, put up with it. The system is breaking beings repair and is satisfying our basic needs less and less.

With the automation of many positions we will have increased opportunity (and perhaps need) to trial and discover our talents again and this will have a chance of crafting purpose in our lives. Rather than be consumers only, we will be able to add our own talents into the system for consumption. It makes for a circular talent economy where creator and consumer are more directly linked without as many middlemen extractors.

In this kind of system, it means that it is unlikely that we will see the massive peaks of wealth that can only be derived through consolidation of resources and crushing of supply chains, but it is possible that talent can be evaluated on merit or use more. This creates a wider spread of resources, and in so doing a wider base that can support more.

Although this is not going to be a fast process, it is already happening as more people are slowly finding ways to supplement their lives independently, many without concern of country borders. For example, a translator or coder can work from anywhere in the world as a freelancer and for several projects concurrently.

What we are working on developing here is a system and network that is able to facilitate content diversity and resource distribution. It is the next step away from the job for life for the money system toward, work for love and meaning approach. It is a baby step, but it will mature and learn to run in time.

If we take a positive perspective of the future, what we are working toward today is society and economy that gives individuals possibility to flourish by being part of a community. At the moment, economic value is the focus because it is a core component of the global system but, it may not always be that way and there could come a time that we are free from the yoke of requiring to earn completely. At least the way we do now.

People talk about the age of abundance but, it was always present, always available. The problem has been we haven't had the technical tools to distribute resources well or the mental tools to understand why we should build them.

Slowly though, the world is waking up and we are part of the hand that shakes them.
