The first question to ask under DDoS attack on Steem is...

in #thoughts5 years ago

Are we DDoS-ing ourselves?

I am at the train station awaiting my train to Helsinki and I am early. Not by choice, it was the only bus I could catch into the city that would get me here before the train.

I am not a morning person but at least I am doing better than the guy sitting near me who is nodding off to sleep on a bench. However, I have the sneaking suspicion he has been up all night - and it wasn't working.

I don't mind the morning travel however, it is just that it happens to be in the morning. It would be much nice if it was around midday.

One of the things I like about writing on Steem is that it doesn't matter too much when the writing is done, bit I have noticed that the topic and style I might use vary a lot. When I am out and about (which is normally during the day), the tone is more conversational, such as this. At home however, I have the space for different kinds of thinking.

A little experiment you could try is that the next time you are walking down the road in a bad mood, lift your head. Often when reflecting on the past we look downward at the ground but when we lift out head, we look forward and the inclusion of more visual data can break our train of thought and pull us from the dwell.

In fact, try to take note of where you look when thinking about different things as often to access memories or collect thoughts, we have the tendency to look in certain directions. My boss looks past and over my left shoulder when collecting her phrasing, a friend of mine looks at my shoulder (I am guessing that is because she is drawn to the chip on it), some people close their eyes to give themselves more processing power by closing out visual stimuli.

Try remembering what your childhood room looked like, divide 227 by 13 or make up a story and notice what your eyes do. The last one is part of the reason many don't trust people who don't make enough eye contact. Lies are just made up stories where the imagination creates the view and that requires mental energy and most will look up and to one side when creating new thoughts.

I don't know much about these things from a technical perspective but, I do observe these things in myself and in others and through my own trial and error tests, there is something to it.

In another life (one where I was much smarter), I think I would have enjoyed a field like behavioural economics or something similar. It is why I like interaction on Steem so much too as not only are there the exhibited behaviours, there is also the transactional evidence that can be used as s cross-reference to support or refute.

At some point, the Blockchain data is going to be pulled apart and reordered to give a very interesting view of human nature, perhaps one that has not been seen before, at least with such granularity. I wonder what it will tell about us?

I wonder what it will tell across time also when factoring in the stages of onboarding, the early adopters, the followers, the bandwagoners to come. Will the habits of the early crypto maximisers who come from a world of wallet growth alone break way for the mass onboarding of people who are looking for a more social experience? Will the communities develop into globally inclusive groups or will they continue to fracture across unchosen divisional lines?

It is hard to say and while some like to predict (me included), this is the first time that something of this nature has actually been possible. Yes, ledgers have been around forever but the ability to record and track with such precision and at such scale across the world has never been available.

Not only that, this kind of processing power has never been owned and operated by the people at this kind of level. @andrarchy was posting yesterday I think about the power of data in the hands of so few - on Steem, across Blockchains and the crypto in hands - it is is who have the power of information and in time, the advantages of scale. We may not be there yet but, we are always on the way and continually getting closer.

Perhaps it just depends on the direction we look.

Kinda funny you mention the head down thing as I think I’m totally guilty of that when I’m a rougher mood.

It is very common and I wonder if we are affected as we stare downward at our phones too. Maybe the outrage of the internet is all body position :D

Lol

Seriously though. Sometimes I’ll creepily people watch in public. The amount of people walking around with their eyes down to their phones is absolutely alarming to see. It’s why I’m not surprised at the videos of dummies walking into doors or mall fountains. 😜

I once heard that border agents use the eye thing to tell when you are lying.

I used to work in retail and I could pick a shoplifter as they entered the store, the intent is in their eyes.

Some agents of all sorts of different agencies are trained in various things, like reading micro expression and tells for lies, etc. Some aren't trained enough at all and don't even know what rights someone has.

I get "random" checked almost every time. Is being brown classed a micro-expression these days :D

It has happened the last 18 years for some reason.

Me too. I blame having a beard.

Personally I think people that look normal are far more likely to be dangerous. Because real terrorists would try to fit in.

Beards are definitely micro-expression triggers...

Yep, I agree. It is the same for most types of crime. Spies aren't like 007, they are administrative pencil pushers with drinking problems.

Damn. I don't drink nearly enough to be a spy.

To be fair, 007 did drink quite a bit. So they at least had part of it right.

I just heard, right before I was preparing to get some sleep, that Steemit was indeed down. I had trouble most of the day anyway, but took breaks here and there...

You know...adulting...

I like your take on things; every action has an equal, and opposite reaction this rings true not only in life, but even the blockchain world.

So hopefully when I wake up later, there will be no more "ghosts in the machine" dare I say...back to normal?

Great post... upvoted, resteem and even a follow!

Just use one of the other interfaces, no harm no foul. :)

Indeed! So many to choose from; Busy, SteemPeak, all dependant upon mobile or desktop I suppose. Thanks for your reply :)

I try to get to everyone that comments but it is not always possible at the moment. Try Steeve also. :)

I wondered what the hell is going on with steemit. Obviously it was this attack I did not know. Thanks @tarazkp

Always good to have so many ways to access the Blockchain these days. As long as the chain performs, everything is okay.

That man sitting beside you reminds me of the day I was up all night and was just sleeping and sleeping throughout the day. Most especially morning in the class. As from that day, I always make sure to have a quality sleep in the night to avoid sleeping all day long or in the morning

He was up drinking all night I'd say.

I don't know what's different or what's going on, but I've noticed I can talk so much better when I close my eyes, especially when trying to explain something at work. I've been worried about doing this at work as people think I'd be crazy, but it allows me to speak so much clearer and create much better explanations.

One of my favorite things about the bear market is how it has "redistributed wealth" on the steam blockchain from the whales who were selling to the minnows, dolphins, orcas that were accumulating. It will be nice during the next bull run to see those who have been accumulating rewarded.

What you say with the eyes closed is common for many. I have come to accept people doing weird things if they are good at what they are doing. If we all worked out what worked for us ourselves, we'd likely get better result.

I am looking forward to the distribution effect too. I am hoping those that could buy get the real sense of potential.

I remember ages ago you told me to try looking up and I don’t know if I ever told you I’m usually looking up because there’s so much to look at 😆 although there’s actually a lot of interesting textures and bugs and things on the ground too which is why sometimes it’s interesting to look down 😝 and none of those things ever stop my thoughts. Those things have full on lives of their own if not universes.

I’m definitely feeling ddosed some days 🤣

Ha, I think I got Ddos-ed at the training today.

I do remember saying that and you came to mind when mentioning it here. Yep, lots of interesting things to look at on the ground too but when angry, they normally get kicked :D

I have yet to get to the point to have the creativity or imagination to just think of something different to write and even have a book full of writing prompts on my desk for emergencies (surprised I haven’t needed it yet). However, I do want to start trying new things! My upcoming vacation may provide the opportunity!

The ideas come the more they are written in my opinion as each text leads to multiple threads of thought. The trick for me at the beginning was to make sure that every time I had an idea , I would write it down with enough notes that I could recall it later. I have a terrible memory (something I might write about today) and taking thought notes helps. Interestingly, taking notes in a class helps not a bit for me. :)

The last one is part of the reason many don't trust people who don't make enough eye contact. Lies are just made up stories where the imagination creates the view and that requires mental energy and most will look up and to one side when creating new thoughts.

They clearly need more processing power. Might I suggest an upgrade.

Better DDoS protection might be enough perhaps.
