This is a model of the Colorado and Southern #6 Narrow Gauge train engine and tender that ran through the Colorado Rockies. This engine was a Baldwin 2-6-0. These were originally wood fired boilers and converted to coal.

The Rockies were such a rugged terrain, that the standard gauge, which was 4 foot between rails, could not go through the tight curves required in spots on mountain passes.

So, they created the narrow gauge, which is 3 foot between rails, and worked well for the terrain. Near Gunnison, Colorado, there still remains the railroad bed for the railroad that ran through the Continental Divide. The passage was called the Alpine Tunnel; the world's highest railway tunnel at 11600 feet. To this day, you can still see the remains of cinders along side of the old railroad bed.
