DAY TWO -

SOUTH ISLAND TOUR - A MUST. Don’t come back until you’ve done this. We booked a private south island tour on VIATOR. If you don’t have the VIATOR app, download it. I use it all over the world. It’s the best and most reliable way to book tours. It’s about a 10-12 hour day. I was nervous about such a big commitment, but it was spectacular and very easy. I could have done it three days in a row. Absolutely loved it. With two people, I’d imagine this would be quite expensive, so don’t feel like you need a private tour. That said, I do recommend doing a tour. It’s more fun to enjoy the ride and views, than have to worry about directions, GPS, etc. Plus, the guides know exactly where to do, what to see, they’ll take pictures of you, etc. It’s just easier.

Here’s what you’ll see.

Glaciers - Some tours have extensions to hike on the glacier. We didn’t do that. It wasn’t important to us, as we wanted to hit all the South Island high notes in one day, but I saw people doing it. That’s just a question of priorities. If you have the time, could be worth it. If not, you get great views of it, take pictures, and on to the next thing.
Seljalandsfoss waterfalls - Make sure you have your guide take you to Gljufrabui waterfall next to this one. It’s the “secret waterfall” hidden behind a small opening in the mountain. It’s full on Goonies. We died over it. Amazing. TIP: Bring rain gear for this one. You’ll get very wet because you can walk behind the waterfall. Also, hiking boats are required, but definitely wear a shoe with a great tread that you’re comfortable in.
Skogafoss waterfall - quick hike/stairs to the top. There’s a great little restaurant there for lunch.
Black sand beaches - Beautiful beach and cliffs. You might stop a the lighthouse on the way.
Puffins! (Local bird) It’s seasonal, so your guide will know.

NOTE: All the sights have bathrooms, and some have gift shops, and restaurants, so there’s nothing to worry about. The country is perfectly set up for tourism. Not in a Disneyland way, but just in a very organized and thoughtful way.

DINNER - Sushi Social. We got back late from the tour, and Sushi Social was open, so we tried it. Expensive sushi, but the rolls are actually big and tasty, so it was fine. Nice atmosphere.
