Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary - Brisbane

in #travel6 years ago

In a previous post about our recent trip to Brisbane I mentioned we went to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary...
This is a pictorial look at the rest of the trip up the river and other animals we got to see that day.

We caught the ferry at 10am and gosh what a glorious day it was!!!

These next few photos are of the Brisbane River (indigenous name Maiwar). It's the longest river in South East Queensland, Australia, and flows through the city of Brisbane.

I found it to be extremely pretty with some of the banks seemingly being planted for the pleasure of the people traveling up the river.

We passed lots of people doing water activities on jet skis, canoes and several school rowing teams.

I was accompanied on the ferry by my gorgeous daughter Amy, extremely special grandson Micaiah, and wonderful sister @kiwideb!!!

After an hour and a bit on the ferry, which had quite a comical narrative going on, we arrived at the Koala Sanctuary.

We all needed the loo by this stage and found a map board to tell us where to go.... well I have to tell you, there was a lot of toing and froing before we eventually found the loo... I have to say our map reading skills where not on point!!!

The next stop was the Kangaroo enclosure where we were able to pat them....

Just look at that face!!!! You just have to love them!!!
I believe these are Wallabies because Kangaroos are much bigger reaching heights of up to 2 meters tall and weighing up to 91 kilos.
Wallabies only reach 1 meter tall and weigh up to around 24 kilos.

This little female had a Joey in her pouch... you can see the babies tail sticking out ... so cute!!!

IMG_1210.JPG

I was intrigued by their feet.. you can see that they are able to hold things in the hands well and imagine what damage that back foot could do if it kicked you!!!

Moving along....

Monitor Lizard

IMG_1212.JPG

These are carnivores so eat insects, birds, eggs and smaller reptiles etc...

IMG_1214.JPG

This is a water Monitor ... also a carnivore so similar diet but they like eating Kermit too...

Tawny Frogmouth

IMG_1216.JPG

Just take a look at this freaky little guy... isn't he adorable!!!
Though he looks like an owl, he is not an owl. He is a Nightjar.
He is nocturnal and sits silently on his perch waiting for his victims to wander along then he pounces down on them.
He eats mice, insects and frogs.

Dingo

Micaiah got to pat the Dingo... he was pretty pleased!

Koala Bears

Except they aren't bears and we were told that they are to be called just KOALAS!!!

At this point my camera battery went flat so I don't have any more photos to share but I'm sure @kiwideb will do a post at some stage and share any photos she has.

We had such a lovely time wandering around the park.

I hope you enjoyed coming for a look around with me.

it is a great place to visit, and the boat trip just makes it better,

Yes it did Len - it was such a peaceful ride up the river :)

For a couple of doddery old people, we thought that the boat left to soon, would have been happy to have spent 2 or 3 days up there.
20 odd years ago, the Boss was happy sitting on the grass feeding one of the Wallabies/Kangaroos, then she noticed the Japanese were all looking, pointing, jabbering away, taking lots of pictures of her.
One of the other Wallabies/Kangaroos had opened her shoulder bag, and found the second bag of food that she had in there,
It was sitting there trying to undo one of those "Zip" bags, hands couldn't get a good enough hold and it was starting to try and chew its way in when the boss turned and had a look.
Needles to say, it was well fed by the time we left.

wow, its really seems you enjoyed your time there.

We did have a lovely time there :) thank you for coming to visit :)

Sometimes, a Kangaroo Tail is just a Kangaroo tail. - Freud.
