Lamington Nationalpark Part 2 - Gwongoorool Walking Track
On our second day in the Lamington Nationalpark we decided to go on a shorter walk since our untrained legs were still sore. The thought of having to walk alone made me sweat.
But luckily their are enough walks to choose from. While there are many walk 10km+ there are also some shorter walks between 5 and 10km.
After a short chat with a lovely elderly lady in the informations center we decided to go for the Gwongoorool
Other then the Lower Bellbird Track the day before, the Gwongoorool is a 3km returning track to a river into a valley. Means, 3km downhill and then 3km uphill. While this doesn´t sound like a hard track I wish I would have choosen a 12km walk again instead. Cried enough!!
We´ve choosen this track for two reasons, first reason was that in the first section of the track we might see Koalas, but we did not. Second reason was that the track leads to a nice river called Coomera River with swimming hole.
Also 3km bergab und dann 3km wieder bergauf.
The track started easy. Always downhill but not to steep and no big rocks ore roots. The vegetation started to change from eucalyptus forest to rain forest like vegetation.
The woman at the Info center told us to turn around every now and then and look up the cliffs. Such a good advice.
Another good advice was to look for black circles in the cliffs. These black circles are carbonised trees. About 23 million years ago, there was a active volcano called Tweed Volcano in this area. Midway through it´s history it broke out and left these carbonised trees behind.
Really fascinating to touch a 23 million year old tree.
From that point on, the path became steeper and the surroundings wetter. We got closer and closer to the river. In addition, there were steep grades and big roots. However, the way was still very good walkable and beautiful.
And then finally after a few hundred meters more we reached the river. Unfortunately my lens gave up the service shortly before we arrived, therefore all photos were taken with my iPhone.
Anyway, that place down there was magical. Pure nature, clear and cold water and only a hand full of people. We explored the area down there before we cooled down ourself in the Rock Pool.
Unfortunately, we did not really have much time, which is why we had to start climbing again soon. The climb was much faster than the descent, but was much more exhausting. Halfway I wished for the rock pool again.
