Travels With Connie #84 Murphy, Idaho

in #travel5 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

I'm going to change things up a little here with Connie. I was sorting and compiling photos from this summer and I have a whole bunch of things from my trip that didn't get covered. I'm going to share some of them here and now.

Murphy, Idaho. It's a little bitty town on the south side of the Snake river. I rolled in there towards the end of a long day that took me through a whole bunch of unpopulated country.

I pulled into Murphy just strung out from the road. It was near 100F (43C) and I had covered hundreds of miles of two lane road through the middle of Idaho. All I really wanted was to stand up, stretch out a little and smoke. I probably shouldn't have parked in the museum lot for that program.

It's not just a museum, it's a display. If you listen really carefully you can just about hear the sounds of a booming little burgh that it once was. When the horse was the primary mover and the railroad was a new thing. It's cattle country with some mining nearby.

Though these photos do not show it at all, I was heading into the teeth of a thunderstorm and knew that it was coming. I really needed to get me going on to Ontario, Oregon for the night. Which was a backed up version of the Baker City, Oregon that I was originally aiming for. I was tired and worn and should have never set foot inside the museum itself.

I was in there for hour and a half. Mesmerized. Talk about a place I need to go back to! It really was a terrific stop, and in a town of less than 200 population! It's the county seat of Owyhee County and court was in session the day I was there, so it was incredibly busy. I must have seen 6 to 10 cars moving.

I'm sitting here right now wondering just how I can schedule my way back to Murphy this summer. I'm going to have to go somewhere near there, it is my 50th High School Reunion year. I'll bet I think of a way :)

This is the sort of country of Murhphy, Idaho. It's my kind of place. Thanks for coming along for the ride!

I really like the picture of the barn in the third shot. The terraced lawn to the side of it is really cool. It really doesn't look like there was a storm coming, but I believe you. I know how fast they can sweep in from the West in those parts. Thanks for sharing this. I hope you make it back there sometime soon!

The town was bigger once, and the barn probably didn't always have the grass around it, but it sure is a pleasant place now. I probably should have taken a picture of the clouds, but I'd been watching that storm rise for hours and knew what it looked like :)

It turned out I got about 27 great big drops of rain, it was a mostly dry storm.

Oh wow, I guess that is preferable to getting washed out! Dry might bring more lightning though...

Greetings, @bigtom13. Beautiful photographs, the landscapes are spectacular. Everything looks so peaceful, it looks like a place of blue and bright sky. Everything very clean and green. I loved your visit there, decide soon to return with more calm, I'm sure you'll enjoy it more.happy 2019 for you.

I do look forward to stopping into Murphy again. It's a long ways from nowhere, but it's served by a good road. Happy New Year to you, as well!

Haha how could you NOT have gone into the museum?! It looks really interesting! Im sure it was worth biking through a thunderstorm, right?!
;)
Great photos!

Exactly. How could I not? And believe me, I've been wet before. It's only really miserable in the summer if you can't ride til you are dry...

I know it may have delayed your getting to your destination and I hope you did not get caught in the Thunderstorm but who would expect such a cool museum in such a small town, and I am glad you stayed a bit so you could share it with us

The story of my travels-balancing time and distance :)

I didn't take any photos inside the museum itself, I really was trying to hurry, but inside there is a collection of printing presses actually used in the county. One of the most incredible collections of 'Tack' (bridles and saddles and bits) that I've ever seen. There is a Buick (about 1917) and carriages and bits of history that all have a local connection. Amazing place literally in the middle of no where.

I take some wonder how it came to be was it a local who just built it up or a group quite intriguing but for sure a cool place for your to find

To my understanding it was a daughter of the local 'big rancher' that started it, but there seem to be a lot of people involved. It's really all there is socially in the whole county that isn't a church.

No CHirch but a cool museum now that must be unique and interesting how it got started I dont know who she is but i like the ranchers daughter style

You always have such great adventures. I am looking forward to some pictures from that upcoming reunion :)
