No, it’s not a pirate city, although it easily could be with all the narrow streets and hideout caves. Pirates would feel very much at home here.

The island of Cres is not as big as I though, population wise. Only 3000 inhabitants, but I imagine it goes up tenfold during summer months.

It is located in the northern Adriatic with the city of Cres itself part of a wide snug bay which from olden times served as a good shelter from storms and rabid seagulls.

The bay is filled with beautiful beaches, only a few minutes away by walk from the city centre. The city is surrounded with fertile land which allows mediterranean plants to grow exceptionally well, especially olive growing from which famous olive oil from Cres is made.

The best way to get the feel of the city is to take a walk through sprawling small streets in the old centre. Narrow and high small houses attaching to each other can make you dizzy

Streets winding in a maze through the old city centre are a typical example of medieval architecture which held no regard to modern standards of accessibility.

Emblems on the house fronts and arches speak plenty about the former ways of life – those of fishermen, farmers, blacksmiths and others. In the past the old city centre was walled and one came to the city through one out of three gates, of which only 2 are recreated today.

A defence tower in the north-western part has been preserved and now functions as a huge liquor stand. For the best events just visit the town square.

Local products are always recommended such as fruits and vegetables, olive oil, honey and other island product. Cres wants to develop tourism since the far 1845 which makes for a very long tourism tradition in the Adriatic.
