The Old and the New

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

If you look intently, you will see the differences. Dissimilarities exist but generally we fail to see their presence. The new on one and the old on the other. The division is seldom, but a double take will be adequate when walking the Kastro.

The Kastro is the old town in the Chora of Folegandros, Cyclades, Greece. Each island has its very own Chora. They represent an island’s main town centre and are usually atop a very high mountain. The Kastro was the islands safe place back when piracy was a dangerous threat. The town still resembles those days as the 15 foot walls stay surrounding the inland, and the 150 foot cliff off the beautiful coastline.

The town sits strategically away from the edge of the cliff. When pirates would sail by, they couldn’t see the establishments, which locals hoped would keep them from setting foot on the island. The drawbridge would swing closed whenever a spotter would call.

Alas, the problems are now no more in existence. The people can settle and value the differences. Dormant at day but thriving at night. When the sun goes down all life forms emerge. Blossoming herds of locals amass. Mixed in at times are great masses of tourists. It’s quite obvious when this collage forms.

Avoiding the masses we camouflage at once. I was mistaken as a local, but unfortunately— it was all Greek to me...

Yes indeed, very rich in history, especially rich in Athens. The islands have a much different feel to them, which allow you to escape the hustle of the bustling city ...

Thanks for dropping by 🙏🏼
