Hawaii Day 2!

in #travel6 years ago

lol remember when I said I'd write these day after another?

Good times...

Anyways, we're back! I'm feeling particularly inspired after the @socalsteemit meetup yesterday, and since I literally have nothing but time, I thought I'd start with revamping this particularly "series" back up!

So then: Day 2!

Day 2 - June 1

My boyfriend was flying in later this evening, so it was mostly another day of just me and my friend. We made plans to go to another beach today, and drove to the other side of the island. I attempted to take some photos during the car drive of the beautiful scenery. Crazy to think we were literally on the rim of the island!

I know the pictures are tall, but I just can't get enough of that beautiful blue sky! Smog-free!

Unfortunately, the beach in question, Waimanalo Beach, had a Man o' War warning! Not wanting to risk it, we kept driving until we happened upon Kailua Beach.

View from the car lol

There was a marked difference between this and Ala Moana. For one, a bit less people. Two, the sand was SO fine! Soft, silky...the opposite of the grittier sand from yesterday.

Alas, it was here that tragedy struck! We headed straight for the water, and for some unknown reason, I didn't take off my pinky ring. Not just any ring. But a French gold ring, one-of-a-kind, family heirloom given to me by my French grandmother, with her family seal on it. A signet ring. You can see where this is going.

Lo and behold, we splashed around, pretending to be waterbenders because we are NERDS, and with one final splash I literally FELT the ring SLIDE off my pinky right. up. to. the. fingernail. And then, plop. It belonged to the ocean now.

We spent nearly an hour looking for it, but because it was a bit cloudy, the water wasn't as clear, and we never ended up finding it. I did call a couple divers to look for it in the days to come, but no such luck. To this day, I just hope it stays in the ocean, and that hopefully if anyone finds it, they will remember my forlorn craigslist ad and contact me. Alas...

To make myself feel better, I did a painting lol.

This painting marks a trend of going over the final piece with ink, and I have to say I really like how it turned out. The colors in particular and the tiny palm tree details always make me smile.

Also, fun fact: if you're doing some urban sketching, with buildings and such, nothing makes the picture look cooler/more complete than telephone poles. I don't know why, but they always add a little something.

Another fun fact: you can start to see the degradation of my nail polish...only day 2....T-T

After painting, my friend and I walked down the beach and I pestered him for some classy candids. Though my dumbass is too derpy to make anything classy out of my face lol.

That's a little clam (I think?) with it's tongue foot sticking out! It was waving it around and then slurped it back inside. Crazy!!

Then, as we were getting ready to leave, tragedy struck again! This time my hat (yes, the very hat in those pictures!) got swept away....I guess the velcro wasn't strong enough to keep it attached to my bag. Farewell, visor. I guess I'll have to revisit my old Korean ajumma cosplay another time...

As we drove back, we stopped by this cool vista that overlooked the city. I don't remember which, but it was a cool view, if a bit windy!

Did you know there's tons of chickens that just wander around Hawaii? I think the lack of predators (minus humans and any stray pets) allows for a safe environment, though I'm not sure how they affect the indigenous ecosystem! This is also why Hawaii has very stringent pet quarantine laws, as their island nature makes for a precarious balance.

After arriving back in Honolulu, we headed to the airport to purchase a lei for TJ. Due to the way the airport was laid out, and Google Maps overall unhelpfulness, we ended up circling around 13 times before FINALLY finding the lei stands! (Turns out we had to make an IMMEDIATE LEFT before the gates. Who knew.) Lei purchased, I dropped by my airbnb for a quick nap, and then went out to grab TJ.

That night we had plate lunch at Zippys for a late dinner. I had the apple pie as I wasn't very hungry, but everyone else was filled up. Then we stopped by our Airbnb for the night.

So that was day 2! Hope you guys enjoyed reading and looking at the photos. Honestly, I miss Hawaii every day T-T (though maybe not so much the heat, as I imagine they're going through even hotter temps than SoCal!)

I can't help to notice the painting, it's so nicely done and definitely a great piece too! I am pretty sure you enjoyed your days in Hawaii and it's totally my kind of travel too. Can't wait to be there one day. Keep it up! Nice work~

thank you so much! I can't wait to visit again. I highly recommend it!

Such a great post :D The photos are great and your text is amazing and the little painting that you did is very nice, also !

I can tell you were having a great time ! I look forward to seeing more of your Hawaii recollections <3

Thank you! yes I had an amazing time. glad you enjoyed reading. looking forward to sharing the rest of the days :D

That little clam is odd looking!!! But kind of cool.

LOVE the first image with the mountain in the distance as you drove towards it. I've never been to Hawaii (as I am terrified of flying) but it sure looks beautiful!

That is actually one great day for you. Nice blue skies photos and painting too!

Hawaii is definitely on my bucket list. Such a beautiful looking country. A real shame that the volcano is currently destroying so much of it. I read recently that it could continue erupting for years to come.

Thanks for this post, and I'm sorry about your ring. Who knows, maybe one day it will make its way back to you.

it's beautiful for sure! I definitely recommend it. The volcano seems to be wreaking havoc on the big island specifically (Hawaii proper), and I was on Oahu which is pretty far, so they don't get as much vog. On the plus side, real estate is pretty cheap over on big island lol. and as for my ring, one can hope.

Sorry to hear you lost your ring  cry.png
I so LOVE your painting! It is beautiful! It looks like a postcard that would sell in a souvenir shop! So very lovely! Great job! ❤️

thank you! i'm actually hoping to make prints and sell them in a calendar or something, so that's very encouraging to hear!
