Hiking up Tungurahua Volcano to a Spa
Banos, Ecuador is in a valley which connects the Andes to the Amazon. The scenary is phenomenal and the town is know for being next to the volcano Tungurahua or 'Throat of Fire'. The Volcano is very active and has spewed lava very recently forcing the town to be evacuated. We decided to go to a luxurious spa part way up the Volcano and instead of taking a taxi or a bus, we took the hard route. It paid off though with the stunning views; the massage and the meal were well earned.
We were ill prepared for a hike up the volcano, it was about a 3km and 400 meters (1312feet) above town. Our motivation was the luxurious spa at the end of the path. At one point we made a wrong turn and ended up in a farmers field, you have to respect these people for sowing fields by hand way up mountains far from any road.
The town is getting smaller...
And smaller...
And smaller.
Finally we made it! To the Luna Volcan Adventure Spa! https://lunavolcan.com This place is an Instagram model's dream.
Because we were early and it was a weekday in the off season we had the place to ourselves. After a dip in the pools we had a well deserved hour massage and a lunch. The food was delicious and the grounds were beautiful. While eating and enjoying a bottle of Ecuadorian wine, we saw wild parrots and watched gardeners collect avacados from the tree.
After our relaxing morning and fantastic lunch we took a taxi back to town. The views on the way down were again unbelievable.
You can see the spa is safer than the town from the volcano judging by this placemat. Tungurahua is also a massive volcano. I would love to go back and spend a few days there. They have a hotel on the grounds too which is one of the nicest in the region.
