Growing Number of Americans Moving To Western And Southern Parts of Country
A new study which tracks migration patterns around the United States was recently published by an American moving company known as United Van Lines; that study contained their annual movers analysis for 2018.
Where are people in the United States moving to?
The state that was found to have the highest inbound migration was Vermont and that was followed by Oregon and others such as Idaho, Washington, Nevada, and Arizona.
Where have people been moving from?
For many of those who are making the move to leave, a great deal of them are earning over $100k per year. The survey also found that more than half of the people who are leaving New York are 55 years of age or older, though the largest age group of movers is those between 18-34.
Perhaps Ohio having some of the worst occupational licensing rules in the country might have something to do with why people want to try somewhere else.
In a separate 2018 migration study from Atlas Van Lines some of the same states were found to be similarly at the top or bottom of the inbound or outbound list, though there were some differences.
- Nevada
- Idaho
- North Carolina
- New Hampshire
- Tennessee
The top outbound for them:
- West Virginia
- Wyoming
- Illinois
- New York
Connecticut
Other driving factors prompting people to make the move elsewhere could also be a lower cost of living, job potential, temperature preference, and more.

It is commonplace that areas that have a lot of appeal for immigrants will be invaded by immigrants who want to find a better livelihood. If an area wants to move forward, they must create a lot of jobs for the population and a safe situation in their area. so that the population will not move outside in search of a better level of life.
They are moving towards Green & Sunshine ;)
Seems like, generally, southern and western states have less regulation, lower taxes, and a lower over all cost of living as long as you stay away from the big cities.
I never cared for them anyway. Hank Williams Jr. Summed it up pretty well in a line of one of his songs "....Just send me to hell or New York City, it'd be about the same to me..." Just insert a city with a pop. Of over 500,000. Lol.

Kansas is an unexpected one. I was in Kansas City, Missouri for 2+ years.
Neighboring state. Hate the winters there. Florida should be better for me.
Maybe Oregon in the spring and summer since they have no sales tax. :-)
Well I am in Michigan, been here my whole life, and am looking to go half way south to like Virginia simply for the better weather. Longer Spring, longer Fall and shorter Winter.
