Jersey Channel Island Blog Series - My home from home
Today I start a new blog series on Jersey. It' an island that really left a lasting impression on me and i'd like to share that with the Steemit community 😀
I feel at home in Jersey, i'm not sure why, but I have an idea. Perhaps its the perfect mix of English and French culture, or its beauftiul interior and great beaches. The west coast is wild and great for surfing. The south has huge beaches with large tidal ranges and castles on islands in the bays. The east coast is rocky with lots of history and to the north there are lots of cliffs and is good for diving and coasteering. This mix of landscapes makes for good exploration and Jersey's size means you relax - you don't feel pressured by the world.
Every visit we stay in the same traditional Jersey cottage. Generally I like to mix things up, but this s a special place with lovely surrounding meadows and close to Ouaisné Bay - the subject of today's post.
Ouaisné Bay is big, like many beaches in Jersey! It is popular with families and paddle boarding is common here due to the calm, sheltered waters. It is also quite a quiet beach too, access isn't great so this is a great spot for a bit of piece of quiet and some fun on the beach! If you want a bit more, you can always take the coastal route north to St. Brelade's Bay which is a vibrant place with pubs, restaurants and cafes.
To get to St Brelade's Bay just walk past the Martello Tower and the WW2 concrete fortification - this take about 15 minutes. During the Second World War Jersey was subject to occupation by the German Army and this is evident all over the island and is part of the fabric of Jersey society. The occupation was somewhat peaceful, with the Germans aspiring to be 'model occupiers' but the populace have not forgotten and the wartime structures are still there all this time later.
Ouaisné Bay is such a small and untouched (by mass tourism) place that the main attraction is the beach, but if you are hungry there is the excellent cafe hut 'Kismet Cabana' and the best pub on the island (in my opinion!) the Old Smugglers Inn. The beer is cheap and the food is good, hearty, warming food. The Fish pie is especially tasty and dogs are welcome!
And lastly, another reason for my enjoyment of this island and feeling of home here... I have traced back my ancestors who lived here in the 1700-1800's. My heritage is literally from here. Maybe this is why!

Yes it is! Next time I visit I am going to get in touch with them, they are waaaay distant, but it might be fun!
