The Last Day (Iceland Day 9)

in #travel6 years ago

I sure had enough of the cold, and the vast barren icy landscapes, and was anticipating getting through the last day as fast as humanly possible. Which is to say, exactly the same speed at which we were already going. Unless I had some "brain enhancers". Anyway, in the same vein I think I'm ready to stop writing about it, so this is it!

The first stop? The last waterfall.

A lot of people today, and a very nice day. The snow path to the falls was quite slushy this time around. On the left lie patches of ice over a stream, and the falls on the distance, looking tiny compared to the towering mountain overhead.

I think the water in this moving picture is going faster than real time.

Here's a clearer shot. Those rocks look like they could be guardians of some deep secret.

Nearby there was this landmark, accompanied by an eerie sign indicating that we are in prison space. I wonder if that Icelandic Bitcoin thief was housed here. And did he break out? I forget. Hmm no, the prison isn't on top of that mountain, but the mountain itself is rather interestingly shaped.

After a short drive we were back in the beloved big city, with the iconic church. We were here for our last meal together before we would go our separate ways.

Nice warm bread. Special here because they have some of their smoked salts and fresh butter.

Grilled fish again and fish soup. Again. For the last time. Tasty and pricey. But hey, it's the last day.

We talked about what our favorite parts of the trip were. I think we pretty much narrowed it down to the hot spring and the glacier hike. But the general experience was nice and scenic. Therapeutic.

One of the nice things is that over these days we definitely grew closer. I suppose it's inevitable when squeezed into a tiny box for days on end. We'll see some of them again in Taiwan, and perhaps we'll visit the UK as well for the other two in the near future. I wonder how they are all doing now...

Everything on the way out was fairly smooth. But in classic @eonwarped style, I almost took the keys of the last host whose place we stayed at with me to New York. I was lucky to have received a phone call from the host, and it was after I went through security. Turns out it was okay to exit, deliver the keys, and go back in. But that was just an unnecessary scare.

I wonder if I will ever choose to go back to Iceland or not. If you ask me right now, I don't think so. I would like to see the Aurora when it's very bright though. But that doesn't have to be in Iceland. Anyway, hope you enjoyed following along the Iceland series! Bye for now.

Stunning! fabulous scenery, great photography, vicarious hitch-hiking on your travels.

I do so love these posts as it gives me the opportunity to live vicariously through your adventures. Iceland has always been on the list. This has made me even more determined to make a success of my life in order to travel and experience the world just like you are doing.

Hmmm...Not sure if I believe that prison sign...I think you wandered into the Icelandic version of area 51!!!

That waterfall...there is something about the imagery of that shot I cannot quite put my finger on, something intriguing, alluring even. maybe it is the contradiction of moving water among a scenery of water that is trapped in time like snow and ice .

Thankyou so much for sharing not only your post, but a little slice of the world that is out of reach to me, right now. BTW the UK would love to have you, I extend a formal invitation...I will have a chat with our Queen see if you can bunk at the palace ;)

Have great fun, take great care and have an epic journey :D

Your pics are so amazing that they almost made me want to be near snow!!! And I hate snow/cold!! Not gonna lie, felt a little fomo lol

That's the next thing... VR snow experience haha. Thanks!

I've never been a fan of these icy places due to the coldness. But your post is proving me the contrary being here - wanting to see that waterfall by myself one day too!
That would make me journey even harder as I always prefer camping rather than sleeping on a hotel or any other place, but that beauty definitely deserves all my efforts to endure the cruel snow :)

I wonder if anyone does snow camping there. That'll definitely save a lot. I think probably summer is good. Though you probably get so much light you won't sleep at all haha.

Yeah haha that's right but when it's summer I go to the mountains where it's around 15-18 degrees at night so it's just perfect :D
And yep, there are a lot out here who camp during winter time and when it's snow outside. It's just that I'm not one of them haha :)

We shall go together, but it's very expensive. Read my other comment, we wanted to rent camper vans and it was easily 2000 euro per van (4 beds) for 10 days!

Ouch..haha 😂

Awesome. Been enjoying all your Iceland posts. Just want to thank you for sharing them :) Keep up the good work @eonwarped!

Thanks! Happy to share my travels :)

Yes, I really enjoyed following your trip to Iceland. It was nice to be a virtual tourist with such a lovely group of people.
