Do we still need to do this? Airport obvious-isms

in #travel5 years ago

I understand there is probably some sort of government regulation that makes these things mandatory... normally when the government gets involved things can get absurd pretty fast. But here are a few things that I just don't understand anymore.

Seatbelt instructions

source

Honestly, is there really anyone that doesn't know how to buckle a seatbelt? I mean if you are a toddler I would understand but it's not like these are those crazy 3-point buckles designed for Formula-1 drivers. I find it absurd that this still goes on. If you can't figure this out - what can you do? I also like that they explain to us the buckling process after the plane is already moving towards the runway - which is after you should already have it on by FAA regulations.

Is this really necessary anymore?

No Smoking Flights

source

I would be very surprised if there is anyone out there that thinks it is ok to smoke in most any public indoor area, let alone on the inside of an airplane, yet we are reminded a dozen times during the flight that the flight is, in fact, just like every other flight in the world and smoking is not allowed.

Every announcement they make reminds you that the flight is non-smoking

Even though I do smoke on occasion i find it crazy that people were ever allowed to smoke in a cramped airborne tube.

Checking your boarding pass at 12 different doors

I get it, we need security and we can't just have people wandering around the airport that don't actually have a flight. However, aren't we overdoing it by checking boarding passes more than 10 times before you get on the flight?

This is a real thing that actually happened to me and I promise I am not making it up. I botched a flight booking and was at the airport on the wrong day. I had my boarding pass and managed to walk through at least a dozen of these checkpoints for a flight on the wrong day. It wasn't until i got to "my" seat to find it occupied that the flight attendant eventually figured out what was going on and realized that I needed to get off the plane. It just goes to show that the multitude of checkers aren't even looking very closely anyway.

pointing to my seat

I am not sure why this happens but I am not really upset about this so much as I find it really amusing: When I am on a flight that only has one lane and you board the plane at the only entrance to the plane (in the front) I love it when they point towards the seats to my right. I'm like "really" in the back? I was really hoping my seat would be in the front with the pilots.

I hate flying. I find it to be an incredibly uncomfortable but necessary method of travel. I think that it is made more annoying by the existence of the constant announcements destroying what little peace you can find. We have no choice but to put up with it. I get that... therefore this is just a rant :)

Sort:

It is crazy and remember the smoking section on the plane. I was a smoker and sat in the section once and it was unbearable. Afterwards I used to visit the smoking section , but I wouldn't sit there again. You would know what it is like in the smoking section of the airport. Those little booths that are filled with desperate smokers. You actually don't even need to light up as there is so much smoke in there already.

I think those smoking booths are a good thing because even as a smoker it makes you question your life decisions. It is truly a den of sadness and really opens your eyes to how terrible a habit this is.

@gooddream, those repetitive ads often tire, but I think they are necessary for those who make a plane trip for the first time. There are unusual things that happen at airports. How can they check a ticket so many times and not realize you're on the wrong flight? What a way to manage security. Something unthinkable has happened to me, the manual revision of the suitcases due to faults in the laser beam system or the lack of electricity at the airport. Can you imagine all the clothes and personal garments in public view? Well, nothing is perfect in this world. Greetings, friend, a hug.

My wife and I just got back from a trip to Vegas. It was a 4 hour flight one way for us and a 3.5 hour flight back. I used to love flying when I was younger, but now I pretty much hate it. It is just a necessity anymore. The bigger jet we were on had screens in the back of the seats in front of us. They just play a video now with all the safety stuff, the attendants don't even have to do anything. I was laughing to myself the other day though that they still have to remind everyone it is a non smoking flight. This was a great read and it made me chuckle especially since I just dealt with a lot of it!

Given that checking is error prone, it makes a case to have even more checks.
The seatbelt thing ... Well there's something to be said for reminders and rituals around certain things, particularly safety reminders. Also, the extended nature of the safety demo ritual gives the crew a chance to size up how the passengers are settling, gives the passengers an extended transition ritual from active/jostling to sitting still and surprisingly probably helps settle the nerves of the slightly nervous flyers. I'm probably one of the few frequentish flying passengers that actively pays attention during the safety demos for the above reasons - well I don't have the nerves anymore.

I understand your "rant" but they have to do it, i mean they are obliged to share the seat belt instructions . About the checkpoint's efficiency ... that depends on where you are I guess and the "pointing to your seat" as well. I've never been pointed to my seat :D Lucky me, right?

What annoys me is the ignorance of some workers. You can see that from far that they are bored, under payed maybe and hate what they are doing. Therefore some of them are treating passengers with less respect or no respect at all.

yeah, i am sure they would rather skip those silly announcements as well

hahahaha!!! I had a GOOD chuckle at the smoking - that is so ridiculous!!! lol And I am an ex-smoker (well, technically I am still a nicotine addict as I still vape) but yeah... I wouldn't even consider using THAT indoors. But then again, having said that... this is in fact the human race we are talking about hehehehe... and there would always be that ONE person that would do it LOL!!!

It's like if you attend a busy outdoor event... they will still make announcements like "please take care of your children"" lol - ok - um, well... I thoought that was pretty mandatory when you became a parent in the first place haha! - YET, believe it or not - there is always at least ONE announcement made at these events stating that "so and so, we have your child at reception" - HOW do you LOSE your child? HAHA :)

...sighhhh

fantastic example about the kids. you gave me the lols

hehe well that is always a good thing :D

I'm with you on the smoking - I can't believe that everyone was allowed to smoke on a plane not that long ago! The same in English pubs too, it used to be filled with smoke. However, I went to Austria recently and was surprised that everyone was smoking there, indoors! In the hotel, in the bars etc... it was strange and stunk so bad...

I wonder if in the future the standard airport 'obviousisms' will change. Probably not, I guess its for health and safety and insurance reasons! Cover their asses!

To add - I have heard that the 'brace' in an emergency situation (head into the knees) is so we break our necks and die immediately... I have only heard that and not put any research into it!

I always fly around with an average of roughly 4 flights monthly. And have noticed some irrelevant stuff performed during the flight. As if we don't know how to use seatbelt and wearing life vest. Even a grade schooler's know how to use that I guessed.

I think I share some of your concerns, especially the one that has to do with reviewing your passage through a number of windows and in the end do not verify anything. But the worst trip I've ever done, I did it on a one-hour trip with a spoiled mother and child. Some seat escorts are really a problem.

Im sure its part regulation part legal (probably more legal than regulation). Im just suprised you dont have to click you agree or sign some paper after the presentation saying you understand everything presented to you and dont have any questions.
