NYPD Smart Cars: I can't help but laugh

in #travel5 years ago

When i first saw this thing i thought it was a joke, but then I noticed that there was a beefy, armed police officer behind the wheel. I wasn't the only person taking pictures because I don't think this is normal.

Whenever I see just a normal civilian driving one of these things I can't help but laugh a little bit but at the same time I would imaging they get a tremendous amount of gas efficiency. As it turns out the engine is a 1 litre engine with 3 cylinders and gets about 40 miles per gallon (or 5.8 litres per 100km.) I have to say that I kind of expected it to get better fuel efficiency than this but i suppose it is a lot better than the usual police cruisers.

It should come as no surprise that the Smart Car police cruisers would never be used to arrest anyone because well, where are you going to put them?

I suppose that if the idea behind these cars were to make the police seem less obtrusive in our lives than it certainly has that effect on me because it is quite difficult to be intimidated by a car that a couple of people (albeit very strong people) could pick up and move as a prank. I know that if i was being chased by this thing i would probably get caught because of all the laughing i would be doing.

It has a max speed of 90 miles per hour and goes from 0-60 in something around 12 seconds. This is obviously quite slow. However, if you know anything about NYC you realize that if you ever get to 30 miles per hour you are having a very good day on the roads.

I'm fine with it because police cars don't need to be huge or fast in a city as densely populated as NYC, but when i see these cars I can't help but conjure an image such as this one in my head.

Well in Venezuela there are police on bicycles you can imagine, however I believe that the state that bought these small cars did it by lot for the economic that comes to acquire and maintain them, especially in these cities are very practical for small escapes where you can not pass an ordinary car, the idea is that not only is that car, I imagine that the support between police is great, look at that car was viralized in the movie of angels and demons, I think it also comes out in the movie the bourne worshiped .. .. Now if there is a detainee as they would mount it? that is a doubt ... Hahahaha greetings brother a hug.

you live in Venezuela also.... i am very intrigued by your country. I'm gonna follow you now, i hope to see some blogs by you also. I would like to visit your country but i'm concerned about what is going on there economically at the moment. Perhaps I am just being a paranoid American :)

If, here the thing goes bad in worse it seems a video game every day that passes, it is a more difficult level. Everything is ideological is better said just like Orwell's book 1984 ... Well my blog is more than everything in Spanish = (Here they try to see the American as the bad guy in the movie, fix the problem that one of the chavez escorts 1000 million dollars .... do you think it is fair and that is one of the thousands who have stolen our nation and knows what the Venezuelan government said? That is a dirty campaign by the Americans ... and much people believe even in the revolution here there is no money, people eat badly, I am one who suffers the terrible hardship we no longer have December .. 1 dollar is too much here are almost 10 dollars a month the salary here is terrible terrible friend.

oh that sounds so awful buddy. I certainly hope that my country (or anyone's country) wouldn't do this to another nation. Let's stay hopeful that thing can turn around.

One thing that I miss about living in the UK is how nice the cops are there. It is a different world! The cars also look very un-aggressive. A couple years back I walked up to a cop in Hawthorne who was just standing there talking to another officer. I said very politely, "Excuse me sir, could you tell me how to get to Prairie Ave from here? I know I am just a block or so away but I keep getting turned around"

He put his hand on his gun and replied "Do I look like a fucking travel agent? Move along."

Dude was totally roided out as well. I did the same thing in the UK, and the lovely officer not only gave me directions, but dropped me off.

It's a sad state of things, but oh God don't get me into it...

That's a pretty tragic story dude. I haven't had any bad experiences with cops in NYC, one time when i was dreadfully lost a cop actually gave me a ride to my sister's house but maybe the NYC cops had already underwent some sort of sensitivity training at that point :)

Well, I do remember it being like that at one point. I got a ride from one when I was a young teen back in the late 80s. But then, about 5 years later my friend and I were hitchhiking to Florida from Ohio and a cop pulled over in front of us and told us we couldn't walk on the side of the highway.

So we asked him if he could give us a ride to the next exit, and he replied "I am not allowed to put people in my car unless they are under arrest"... So we started to walk to toward the exit and he stopped us "You can't walk on the side of the highway.."

So basically we had to walk up the side of a cliff and walk through thorn bushes and tall weeds in order to get to the next exit, and not get arrested for ignoring the cop.. The exit was about 1/2 a mile away.

I always say that good cops understand the difference between a law and the reasonable enforcement of said law. The guy in your story would not qualify for this honor.

I agree wholeheartedly.

future cops at work😀

oh wow, just checking out the interesting tag #getyerlearnon … cleaver @gooddream … but serious this one got me laughing, totally agree this should not be a law enforcement vehicle. How do they even fit the villain in the back? lol too funny, great post

well someone once asked me why #getyerlearnon ? and it is just because a friend of mine bet me that i couldn't make it popular.

So far my friend has been right. :)

I'll vote that one north, and if I get some relative content it'll be time to #getyerlearnon for sure

The thing is #getyerlearnon applies to anything others might not know. Which is almost all topics
