Swimming in a Lava Tube - Kona Hawaii
Yes you read it right we went swimming in a Lava Tube on the Big Island of Hawaii. One of our friends took part of the @hawaiialoha team into a laval field in Kona Hawaii. We went off road and walked out into the vast expanse of lava. Our friend led us to this depression and this crack you see in the picture above.
We walked in and it was pitch black. All we had was some dive lights.
The sides of the tube were smooth unlike the sharp lava on the surface. This makes sense as the molten lava once flowed like water through this tube in the past.
As we went deeper into the tube the tube narrowed and the rocks were damp.
We finally reached our destination and our friend told use to look over the edge of the path we were standing on. We shone our lights over the edge and it was crystal clear water. At first we didn't realize it was water as it was perfectly still and clear as there was no air movement of any kind in the tube.
We went further in and there was a wider channel. Our friend took his dive light and jumped in. We followed and it was unbelievably cold. Colder than any water we have ever swum in in Hawaii. We dove down and explored the water but it was too cold to stay in it for too long. After a few minutes we got out and were shivering.
It was an amazing experience and we wondered how people found this.
