From Sirmione to Pozzolo sul Mincio

Second appointment with Roads. The route that I propose is certainly not a path full of curves and alpine passes, but has a great charm: conveys tranquility. This short route is to be done slowly at a slow pace, trying to also enjoy the great plain and the river Mincio.

It starts from Sirmione, but of course you can visit the many villages along the shores of Lake Garda, which always offers beautiful and romantic views.
Sirmione is a gem on the shores of Lake Garda, it is worth stopping, I think even spend a night, because at sunset and at night has a great charm.

The things that deserve a visit to Sirmione are many, also because walking on this tongue of land that enters the lake is always pleasant.
Surely the archaeological area of the caves of Catullo 1 is one of the main attractions of Sirmione, it is also worth a visit to the gothic church of San Pietro in Mavino 2 to the remains of the Monastery of San Salvatore 3 take a picture of the Villa of Maria Callas 4

At sunset the view of the lake is always remarkable and perhaps the most beautiful part to see after sunset is the square of Sirmione and, in particular, the Scaliger Castle 5.
A few kilometers from Sirmione you can already make a first stop at Punta Grò and, soon after, Peschiera del Garda.

The itinerary that I propose, left the lake, unravels more or less along the Mincio, crossing the border between Lombardy and Veneto several times and crossing the river in several points.
The route also enters and leaves the Mincio Park6, a series of protected areas along the river.

In fact, soon the lake reaches the great plain and the landscape changes immediately, certainly is dotted with roads, factories, warehouses, but there is also the plains, the river, the trees, the green.
A few kilometers and you get to Ponti sul Mincio, where you can visit the Castle.

Not far away is the Castle of Mozambano 7, in the municipality of Mozambano.
After the Mincio you enter Veneto but you always stay close to the river until you reach Valeggio sul Mincio, where you can take a detour to go up to see the remains of the Scaliger Castle 8 from which you can enjoy a nice view, weather permitting obviously.

Also in Valeggio sul Mincio there is the Parco Giardino Sigurtà 9 a very interesting area to visit especially from the naturalistic point of view.
We finally arrive at Ponte Visconteo 10, near which there are some locks and jumps. This place I find it very beautiful, the remains of the entrance doors of the bridge, the brick walls, a short stretch that crosses the river so majestic.

The route continues to Pozzolo sul Mincio, in the sense that this was the pecorage that I did, but from here nothing forbids to continue, for example, to Goito, to Marengo or even to Mantua.

See you at the next episode ...
