Angkor Temple Guide: # 22a Phnom KromsteemCreated with Sketch.

I inadvertently overlooked a couple. I have therefore numbered them in order to keep the whole list in alphabetical order.

Phnom Krom was built on a hill overlooking the beautiful Tonle Sap Lake, the largest inland lake in all of Asia. It was constructed towards the end of the 9th century by the Khmer King Yasovarman (889 – 910). This lovely Angkorian temple was built in dedication to the Hindu gods: Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. This is great sightseeing; the views of the lake are spectacular.

A beautiful temple original dedicated as Hindu

The Phnom Krom temple faces east and is encircled by a laterite wall. The are gates on each of the sides, as usual at the cardinal points of the compass. Close to the east gate are a group of four small buildings that are line north – south and were possible once crematoria. The main part of the temple are the three towers which also follow a line of north to south.

The three towers stand on a platform and are reached by climbing seven steps. Each one of the towers was dedicated to a different god. The northern most tower to Vishnu, the middle one to Shiva and the southern most to Brahma. Built from sandstone they have suffered from wind erosion over the years and sadly much of the inscription work has been lost.

Yasovarman built three temple mountains in his day and this is the southernmost of the three. The other two being Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Bok. There used to be an old narrow gauge railway running from here. It travelled between the long unused quarries here all the to Siem Reap and was used to carry stone.
This temple attraction really is worth the trouble. Though probably for the view as much as the historical content, these days.

Top Tips for Phnom Krom

To get the best of the views over Tonle Sap come at dawn or dusk. The changing light at these times affords spectacular photographic opportunities. The views afforded are among the best things to see in the area.
