Belgium - A Brief Photographic Journey

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Thanks for joining me in my adventures. This blog is dedicated to travels off the beaten path. You won't find my review of Disney World here, but you might just discover a new way to explore your world. If you're a fan of the road less traveled, I think you'll like what we have in store today.

Today's post is going to be primarily pictures I took while in Belgium. The city captured my heart immediately, with its striking rock formations, ancient history, homage to icons, and quirky sense of humor. Follow me on a brief photgraphic tour of one night in Belgium.

To begin, the above picture is taken in the Northern city of Dinant, home of the Dinant Cathedral. The river in this part is expansive and provides a perfect mirror of the smattering of homes and castles along the shore.

Here you can see the ruins of an old tower, half-hidden in the brush on the mountainside. Belgium boasts more castles per capita than any other European city, according to one local we spoke with.

This awe-inspiring rock formation greets visitors as they enter the city of Dinant. It can be a little nerve wracking to drive between these massive slabs of stone, but its safe as can be.

Moving further into the city and closer to nightfall, the country's pride in their history can be seen. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgium native.

Next we see the Dinant Cathedral, a huge building build right into the side of a mountain. Towering above, you can see the Dinant Fortress, the site of a massacre not that many years ago. A future post will share my experience there, along with the 1,000 steps to get to the top of the mountain.

A finally, Belgium's unique sense of humor. Don't even think of letting your dog do his business here...you'll be on video if you do!

Thanks for stopping by! Join me in my next post to learn a little more about the places and culture which make Belgium so unique. In the meantime, find me at Travel Life Services to book your own unique adventure.

That rock formation is truly eye catching and the evenning scenery looks so relaxing.

Safe travels!

Thank you! I really wanted to climb all over it. I bet the view from the top is amazing too.

Hi @mattifer wow wonderful nice good amazing photoshoot you all pic shoot amazing classical photography nice

Hi @habib92 thanks you wonderful appreciate good photo too nice come by again please. :-)

Gorgeous photos, and that impressive cliff at the entrance to the city of Dinant is AMAZING * ___ *

Thank you! Yes, I agree about the cliff. I did not get the chance to jump out and explore it and climb on it and touch it this time, but next time...it's on!

I love this @mattifer! I had no idea about the number of castles there as well. Looking forward to more of your trip here too; beautiful photos!

I'm submitting this to c-squared too; nice work :)

Thanks a bunch!

It really seemed like there were castles everywhere. We stayed at one that had been converted into a hotel. It wasn't an ancient castle by any means, but it was grand and the grounds were beautiful.

That's so awesome @mattifer! Way better than a Holiday Inn haha

Oh yeah! We lucked out with the places we stayed. They were all nicely maintained and had some cool features. I didn't take many pics of the hotels and houses though. I just don't typically find that part of a journey to be share-worthy.

Oh I think you'd be surprised at how many would love to see pics of hotels and houses :) It's worth a try anyway ... I'd love to see it :)

Thanks for the tip @lynncoyle1. I'll see what I can do about taking more lodging pics. When you see it, you'll know it's inspired by you. :-D

hahaha that's awesome! Be sure to tag me in the post so I don't miss it :)

That split rock and that driving through the gap looks really cool. How would you like to have the job of watching videos of dogs taking a dump? That would have to be the second worst job around there.

So I have to ask... if watching dogs poo is the second worst job, what's the worst?

Cleaning up the dog poo.

Makes sense. :-D

I'm honored. Thank you!

Huh - who knew Belgium was so pretty! Looks like I'll have to add it to my list of places to go before I kick the bucket!

Most definitely! I didn't put them in this post, but I've got some pictures of Belgium trees that are so full of personality that it's ridiculous. Check back in a few days. I should have that up by then.

Sounds good! Be sure to @ me!

Will do. My few days got busy, so I haven't gotten that far yet, but rest assured I will. :-D

That picture at the end is funny 😂😂

I thought so too. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by!

Sure, you are welcome to use this one for the 1001 Places Project. I didn't think it was long enough to meet your criteria.

Just passed the borderline :) but we always hope to support the community as much as possible.

My beloved Belgium! I spent there 1 amazing year! They have many castles but not all of them are kind of amazing so I think it's about the interpretation :) Dinant looks stunning! I've never been there but now I wished I would have know how beautiful it was before when I was living there :) Thank you for sharing Jen! Your photos are very nice!

I spent 2 days there and was hooked. I'd love to live there for a while. It looks like property is relatively inexpensive there too, so it's a real possibility.

Thanks for stopping by! Hope to see you in Belgium? :-D

I enjoyed living there, but I'm not sure if I would ever live there again. I don't know why though.. just a feeling..

When you're in Belgium let me know and I'll come over :) It's not that far! :)

I'll do that. We can have a #steemitbloggers party. :-)
