A Few of my Favorite San Francisco Things

in #travel5 years ago

People always ask for recommendations of favorite San Francisco activities. With a plethora of things to do, its natural to be curious about what they might be missing. Here are some of my favorite things:

The Palace Hotel: Nothing personifies San Francisco's history and beauty quite the way this hotel does. Built in 1875, it has gone through many renovations to become the historic gem that it is today. Dining in The Garden Court under the sunny stained glass and crystal chandeliers for lunch, Sunday Brunch, Afternoon Tea or cocktails is a special occasion. The Pied Piper is also a fun place for a cocktail.

The Big 4 Bar: Located at the Huntington Hotel, this classic haunt provides a glimpse into the world of the high-finance railroad barons for which it is named, who shaped San Francisco history. Sit at the bar or one of the tables and soak in the men's club ambiance. Champagne and French Onion Soup are some of my favorites.

Top of the Mark at Mark Hopkins Hotel: Perched atop Nob Hill the panoramic views from the 19th floor are dramatic. They offer an extensive martini list, wine, and beer. This is a favorite place to enjoy the sunset over the Bay with a cocktail.

View Lounge at Marriott Marquis: When a drink and a view is required or to impress a friend who is in town for a convention, ride the elevator to the top floor of the hotel where a modern lounge awaits with stunning views. Their small plates feature seasonal, local ingredients of tasty bites meant for sharing.

Alfred's Steakhouse: This family-owned steak restaurant serves grass-fed, aged beef in a opulent dining room under chandeliers. Start with a cocktail at the bar, they specialize in martini's, and then move to the dining room to be ensconced in a red leather banquette while enjoying a delicious meal.

Coit Tower Stairway Climb: Start at the base of Sansome Street near Levis Plaza and hike the scenic stairways (Filbert or Greenwhich) up the back of Telegraph Hill. While huffing and puffing on the steps be sure to turn around and admire the bay views. Not only is this a great workout but the stairs meander through lovely hillside gardens and cottages. Bridge to bridge views reward the effort from the base of the tower. Restored murals line the walls depicting industries that made San Francisco a leader.

Fisherman's Wharf: While it is touristy, there is a lot to love about San Francisco's working waterfront. Commercial fisherman supply the local restaurants with the freshest seafood caught hours before. The crab stands offer fresh Dungeness Crab or shrimp on a fresh sourdough roll, along with other seafood specials. Several boats offer bay cruises for $15, a great bargain and less crowded than the large sightseeing tours.

Buena Vista Cafe: Located near Ghirardelli Square this iconic establishment invented Irish Coffee. Known for their Irish Coffee they also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I love taking the cable car that drops off right outside the Buena Vista. From there you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf and catch the F-line street car or Bay/Mason Cable Car line back.

Land's End: This is where the Pacific Ocean meets San Francisco's western edge near the Cliff House. Hiking trails overlooking Sutro Baths connect all the way to Lincoln Park and the Palace of the Legion of Honor. Spectacular ocean views and Golden Gate Bridge are mesmerizing.

Louis Diner: Located near the Cliff House, this family owned restaurant has been serving San Franciscan's for 75 years. I love their charbroiled burger and shake but they also serve breakfast, sandwiches, and salads. Enjoy views of the Sutro Baths ruins located below at ocean level.

Ocean Beach: Many residents and visitors forget the beautiful swath of beach on the Western edge of the city. Stretching from the northern end at the Cliff House all the way to Fort Funston this is an expansive, beautiful beach. It can be windy, foggy, and cold but on those magical warm days it is spectacular.

Jazz at the Bookshop: Located in the tiny hamlet of Glen Park lies an independent bookstore, Bird & Beckett where they have live jazz every Friday night from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. For a donation of $10 for the music and a donation for beer or wine you can have an intimate evening of jazz with other music fans. Browse the selection of new and used books and come away with a new favorite. Afterwards have dinner at one of the neighborhood restaurants, taqueria or visit the local dive bar.
