Getting Ready for a Weekend of Sailing!

in #travel6 years ago

As you might know, I've got a degree in naval architecture. Meaning I was taught how to design ships :) While I was studying for this degree I met a whole bunch of other sailing lovers with whom I still spend time with once in a while.

A couple of times a year we go sailing with a few of us. And although it is getting harder and harder to get things organized (you know the story: jobs, family, kids, etc...), this weekend we finally go out sailing again!

We used to always go with one of my friends' tiny little sailboat. The boat, a Friendship 23 (NL) from the 70s, is quite small. Especially when you are getting older and some extra space is appreciated :)

Here's a picture of the Friendship under full sail.

This was the Friendship while cruising the Friesian (NL) waters during the so-called Sneekweek (NL)

A new start!

The Friendship was owned by one of my friend's family for over 20 years. They've sailed it many many summers through the whole of the Netherlands. My friend decided recently that it was time to retire the Friendship and look for something new.

This week he successfully sold the Friendship and bought a new and somewhat bigger sailing boat. It's an 8-meter boat (2 meters longer than the old one) from the late 1970s. For those familiar, it's an X-79, manufactured by X-yachts in Denmark. Here are some screenshots from the original brochure:

And here's the actual boat we will be sailing. I'm really exciting!

So what's the plan?

The boat is currently in Lelystad, a city that's located on a man-made island directly on the IJsselmeer:

Depending on the wind, we will sail the new boat from Lelystad to one of the cities on the other side of the lake and back with an overnight stay.

The weather looks really promising and I am really looking forward to it! After the trip, I'll write another blog with some pictures of the trip!

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Well it looks like you're gonna have a great weekend yourself! Enjoy the trip with the new ship. Really love the blue colors btw. How does the inside look?

Yes, it was! The boat handled itself really nicely! And it came with so many trimming options. It is like being in a candy store :P Here is a link to the original folder showing the inside: https://3brefc126v633i9r4zk9q3p5-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/X-79-brochure-II.pdf For the length of the boat (8 meters), the interior is quite minimal. But it was designed as a sports boat, so then it is typically very basic.

I've just posted some pictures of the trip here: https://staging.busy.org/@michelmake/loop-around-the-dike-maiden-voyage-with-new-sailing-boat
