Exploring Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai Thailand

When you are in Chiang Mai, don’t skip a visit to Thailand’s highest peak, Doi Inthanon. Unlike other mountains that require a climber’s fitness and experience, Doi Inthanon’s beauty and charm are accessible to everyone, young and old alike.

Doi Inthanon stands tall at approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. It boasts of cascading waterfalls, evergreen forests, cool temperatures, and majestic pagodas. The easiest way to get to Doi Inthanon is through booking a private tour or car that can take you to the summit. Renting a private car for two to three people will cost you 2500-3000 baht or at least 90USD. From the parking area, you can easily walk all the way to Doi Inthanon’s peak.

Plan an overnight camping trip or stay in one of the bungalows so you have enough time to explore the park. Book your reservations ahead though as the park welcomes a lot of visitors and accommodations can be full.

The trails of Doi Inthanon are friendly to all types of hikers. Kaew Mae Pan Nature Trail and Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail are the two main trails. Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail will take around 30 minutes to complete. Ang Ka Luang is largely made up of wooden boardwalks covered by lush green canopies of moss and trees.

You will enjoy this trail for its peace and quiet only broken by the chirping of birds unique to the area. Kaew Mae Pan Nature Trail is closed from June to October so make sure to visit outside these rainy months. Unlike Ang Ka Luang, this trail is longer and will take you two to three hours to finish. You cannot hike the trail without a local Hmong guide. The services of the guide will cost a group 200 baht or around $6.

Kaew Mae Pan Nature trail offers breathtaking vantage points. Along Stations 14 and 15, you will see one of Doi Inthanon’s most famous attractions, the twin pagodas or chedis: Phra Mahathat Chedi Nabhametaneed and Phra Mahathat Chedi Naphapholphumsiri. Explore the trail either during sunset or sunrise and you will get one of the most stunning views Doi Inthanon has to offer.

There are various viewing decks in the trail’s different stations so make sure to snap a photo. One tip most travelers will give you is to check the weather ahead. Doi Inthanon reveals itself best when there are no fog and clouds to obscure its views.

Mae Ya Waterfalls

Waterfalls enthusiasts will find Doi Inthanon’s big waterfalls breathtaking and its smaller waterfalls charming. The waterfalls are best enjoyed during or after the rainy season. Among its most famous is the Mae Ya Waterfalls. A parking area ten minutes away makes Mae Ya easily accessible. Here you can take great scenic photos in its cascading waters and most visitors rave about how it is easily Thailand’s best waterfalls.

Like Mae Ya, getting to Wachirathan Falls does not require a lot of effort. Because the falls is so powerful, you cannot get too close but the spot it perfect for lunch. There are other smaller falls in the park like Siripoom, Sirithan, Pha Kun Na, and Wang Khwai to name a few. If you have more than a day to explore Doi Inthanon, drop by these falls by following the many signs along Doi Inthanon’s trail. If you are pressed for time, you can see Mae Ya and Wachirathan instead.

Foreigners will need to pay 300 baht or approximately $9 as entrance fee to the park. The twin chedis or pagodas have a separate fee of 40 baht or $1. Fees for locals are cheaper at 50 baht. Regardless though, Doi Inthanon is well-worth every single penny.
