Càdiz, what lives you've lived!

in #travel5 years ago

I visited Càdiz with my big Spain voyage in 2016, I didn't however know it's very long and incredibly interesting history til more recently.

Apparently Càdiz is the oldest city in western Europe with ruins dating to 3100 BCE, however the first recorded settlement was in 1104 BCE by the Phonicians who had named the town Agadir.

After that Carthage moved in after the first punic war only to be subsequently kicked out by Scipio Africanus coming under roman control in 206 CE. After the fall of the western roman empire the Visigoths moved in, there was also a brief appearance of the Byzantines in Càdiz and eventually around the 8th century the Moors finally made their claim on the city renaming it Qādis , hence the present pronunciation.

The Reconquista finally took back the city mid 13th century and during the age of exploration the city exploded with trade being the main port of the Spanish treasure fleets. This was during the time when the spanish were probably the biggest player on the board so imagine the sheer wealth that must have passed through the city.

Today, long after the spanish golden age Càdiz is mostly known for its Andalusian sunny skies and it's beautiful beaches.
