Amex Offer: 10K Bonus Points For Spending $600+ On AmexTravel.com

For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases the offers can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. These offers come in different forms, including discounts and even in some cases bonus points.

At the moment there’s a targeted Amex Offer for 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you make a single purchase of $600+ for a prepaid hotel booking through amextravel.com by July 15, 2018. This is similar to an offer we saw late last year.

Do keep in mind that this promotion is targeted, though it at least seems to be pretty widely targeted. For example, in my case I see the offer on The Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN, and more.

The thing that makes this deal even more valuable is that both The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN offer 5x points for hotels booked through amextravel.com. In other words, if you take advantage of this offer and spend exactly $600 using one of those cards, you’d earn 13,000 Membership Rewards points. I value those at ~1.7 cents each, meaning that you’re getting $221 worth of points on your $600 worth of spend. That’s a return of about 37%, which is excellent.

The big catch when making hotel bookings through amextravel.com is that you typically won’t earn points with your preferred hotel loyalty program, since this qualifies as a third party booking. Furthermore, bookings through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts don’t qualify for this promotion, since those rates are booked through a different website.

For many there will be an opportunity cost to taking advantage of this promotion. However, for those who aren’t super hotel loyal, it could make sense to forego hotel points in order to earn $220+ worth of rewards on $600 of hotel spend. Furthermore, this is a great promotion if you’re staying at an independent hotel that isn’t otherwise eligible for points accrual.
