Krakow flashbacks: monumental St. Mary´s Basilica
Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!
Today, I would like to introduce you to another iconic landmark of the charming Polish city of Krakow - the St. Mary´s Basilica.
With its very origins dating back to as early as the 13th century, this majestic Gothic church is located on the Main Market Square in the historic center of Krakow. Reaching a stunning height of 80 m (262 ft), the basilica is the second highest building in the city (after the infamous Szkieletor Tower).
Considered one of the finest examples of Polish Gothic architecture, the St. Mary´s Basilica is easily recognizable by its two towers that look as if they were built in different architectural eras and they are not even of the same height.
There is actually a gory legend behind the creation of these towers. According to the legend, two brothers were assigned the task of building the towers. When the younger one found out that his tower was shorter than the one that his older brother made, he killed him. Soon after that, however, the younger brother could not live with the remorse anymore and committed a suicide - with the same knife that he used to murder his older brother with.
These days, the church is one of the most visited and photographed tourist attractions of Krakow. While I am not a big fan of horse carriages in cities (since the animals are often mistreated), I must admit they go well with the unique, somewhat fairytale-like atmosphere of this charming historic city.
Both photos were taken by me during my recent trip to Krakow that I made to meet some of my Steemit fellows there at the SteemFest.
