Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe

in #travel5 years ago

One of the most striking (and small) chapels I have ever seen lies on the western edge of Patio Escondido in Old Town, Albuquerque , New Mexico. Once home to a sacred arts school, known as the Sagrada, the chapel was built and designed by the founder of the school, Dominican Sister Giotto Moots in 1969. She intended the chapel to be a gathering place for students of all religious backgrounds, which is why the chapel has not only Catholic influences, but is also full of Native American styles as well.

The beautiful space, named Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe, houses this shrine for her in its cozy interior.

An engraved triptych lines each wall of the inner chapel. My friend noted that the writing resembles the font from Star Wars.

The most striking thing about the entrance to the chapel, is this luminous window immediately to the left of the entrance. The image depicts a complex calendar of Feast Days and moon phases. This beautiful window blends contemporary art into a traditional setting.

The Chapel of Our Lady Nuestra Guadalupe is a hidden gem of the city. The hushed beauty and sacred feeling of the place are evident in every inch of this space.
