the naschmarkt in Vienna
The Naschmarkt, which has existed since 1774, is the largest detail market in Vienna with around 2.3 hectares. In its present form it was planned by Otto Wagner and opened in 1916.
In the Naschmarkt there are more and more gastronomic centers. These are usually quite small. For some you can sit in front of the restaurant in the sun. Here you will find Turkish, Greek, Asian, Italian, Moroccan and also Austrian pubs.
The name "Naschmarkt" may be due to the offered sweets such as the dried fruits or dates. Already in the 16th century existed on the site of the current Naschmarkt a farmers market, were traded on the mainly dairy products. In the course of the redesign of the Wientales by Otto Wagner, the riverbed of the vienna river was roofed over and dedicated as a marketplace. The opening was in 1919. The historic stalls from the First World War have been preserved in the Naschmarkt, which is why the Naschmarkt has become a Viennese institution and landmark.
The Naschmarkt is still today a historically preserved market in the center of Vienna. Its multicultural flair is well known. The Naschmarkt reminds a bit, however, that the Balkans are starting in Vienna.
Otto Koloman Wagner was the most important Austrian architect, architectural theorist, visionary and city planner of Vienna in the Belle Epoque or the fin de siècle. His Art Nouveau buildings, his university work and his writings on urban planning helped him in the 1890s to world standing.
Italian craft, I could hardly part with these beautiful things.
I love this beautiful old architecture.
What an incredible market in one of my favorite cities. The old architecture is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing the photos. Makes me want to visit Vienna again.
Thank you very much!
The food market looks so cool. I bet Dr. Falafel knows how to do a good falafel. Sounds right up my alley.… :) and my god, the good detail on the outer building is truly remarkable. We don’t see much architecture like that in the United States. Not to say we don’t have it but it speaks to the history of the city when you’re surrounded by it. Very cool @proanima.
Thank you @puravidaville, Vienna is a beautiful city, I lived in Vienna for 20 years, but now I live in the countryside.
It’s is beautiful. My husband and I just watched a movie that was based in Vienna, gorgeous architecture! I bet the country side has its charms too :)
Thank you, Yes, the landscape is beautiful, too.
I can imagine.
What an amazing experience @proanima. Imagine the delicious dishes you could make with that variety of fruits and veggies! I'm sure @dswigle will appreciate this market for her #marketfriday
