I won a trip to Abu Dhabi - would you go?

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

Last week it was clear: I won a trip to Abu Dhabi

The chance to win this trip was not very big. A lot of contestants from all over Europe could win one of the 4 tickets.
Our company initiated the contest together with one of our vendors.

What was the deal?

Every country had a turnover target on four categories. The best performer of each category wins an all-inclusive trip to the Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi on 23. to 25.11.2018.
The flight leaves on 22.11.2018 and we would stay four nights at the Abu Dhabi Hilton Hotel before our flight takes us back home on 26.11.2018.

Some facts about the Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi

Source: Wikipedia

Race information:

  • Number of times held: 9
  • First held: 2009
  • Most wins (drivers): United Kingdom Lewis Hamilton (3), Germany Sebastian Vettel (3)
  • Most wins (constructors): Germany Mercedes (4)
  • Circuit length: 5.554 km (3.451 mi)
  • Race length: 305.470 km (189.810 mi)
  • Laps: 55

You know what: I will not go!

What I would find there is not my style.
Pure luxury created on values that I do not tolerate.
There would also be a big chance for me to be imprisoned. The chance my words would be judged as disrespectful is very high. Respect needs to be elaborated and can not be inherited.
Knowing from the very beginning that we would have a chance to win a trip I asked my manager if he would like to go.
He said he would be happy to go but it would be my prize and I should go.
I also think it's totally insane to sit in a plane for 13 hours (6.5 hours one way if you have a direct flight) to watch cars riding some hundred times the same round.
Additionally, the whole trip is a waste of money in my opinion.

I can imagine what this trip will be like

  • You arrive at the airport and will be picked up by a car that brings you to the hotel.
  • Totally exhausted you will have some food and perhaps a drink before you go to sleep.
  • The next days you will be picked up to go to the Grand Prix and watch the training.
  • Totally exhausted you will have some food and perhaps a drink before you go to sleep.
  • The next days you will be picked up to go to the Grand Prix and watch the qualification.
  • Totally exhausted you will have some food and perhaps a drink before you go to sleep.
  • The next days you will be picked up to go to the Grand Prix and watch the race.
  • Totally exhausted you will have some food and perhaps a drink before you go to sleep.
  • The next day you will be brought to the airport again and fly home again.
  • Totally exhausted you will have some food and perhaps a drink before you go to sleep.
  • The next day you are expected at work again.

And at work, they will ask you: "Did you have a nice weekend? I heard you went at the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi - that must have been a fantastic experience!!!"

So, now tell me: am I crazy not going?

What would you do?
Would you go? Perhaps just because it's all-inclusive and will not be as I think?

Well I m sure it will be interesting to watch the race but I would never travel to a country that doesn't respect human rights.

Indeed another valid reason ...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I would go, watching cars going round and round in circles would not be on my list either of favourites.

Once there perhaps say you not well and spend the day out in the sun enjoying what the hotel has on offer.... Just thinking aloud!

Thanks for stopping by @joansteward!
I gave the trip to my manager already ...

Hmm. I think you're just being pessimistic. It could be great fun, you know. Plus you get to meet other people and learn new stuff.

If we were friends, I would have asked for your ticket. This feels like grand opportunity.

I know you typically would not spend money like this. Well, it's not your money.

At what end, it's up to you. Just do whatever makes you happy

To me it is a great opportunity to explore and know things especially if opportune u can get to see lewis Hamilton then i will surely go.

On the other side
If the cost is going to be bear by me then am going no where.

Thanks for your thoughts @oclinton!
Indeed it could be a great opportunity and it would cost me a single cent. The disadvantage of this trip is that I would not get the chance to get to see much more than the airport, the hotel, and the Grand Prix circuit.
I'll wait what my manager will tell me about the trip when he's back.

If I get a chance like this, I would go there for sure. I have been there around 5 years back and the trip was really amazing.
An advise from my end would be to try Big Bus there. It is a hop-on hop-off service and you can purchase 2-day ticket to explore almost all important spots across Dubai, including the Dhow Cruise.

Thanks, @rjoshicool for your comment!
The disadvantage of this trip is that I would not get the chance to get to see much more than the airport, the hotel, and the Grand Prix circuit.
If I only had one day for myself my thoughts about the trip would be totally different.

Steem on!!!

I won't go either. Making a so long travel to watch a Formula One race it is not worthy.

Additionally, I do not want to give money from tourism to any homophobic country, even if I don't have to pay the travel.

You say it - indeed!

I think that you should go, its always great to know other places and people.

Thanks for stopping by @sfcq240788!
You might be right but I will not go. Mainly I would see the airport, the hotel, and the Grand Prix circuit.
13 hours in an airplane just to see this for some days is not what I'm looking for.

Steem on!

Well even with only that, its still more than nothing my man!! enjoy!!!

Steem on!

I think it would be a great opportunity for you to go as visiting different countries may allow you to experience many new and wonderful things, It could also give you a new insight on there culture and deepen your understanding, you never know it might make you decide to visit again! And if your afraid of saying disrespectful things you shouldn't really stress about it because it will help you learn and avoid the mistakes next time! If you are curious about the culture of any country you can always hit me up and ask me to create an information article about it on my page. Thank you, and good day to you sir.

Thank you so much for your kind words @culturious!
I have to admit you are 100% right. The disadvantage of this trip is that I would not get the chance to get to see much more than the airport, the hotel, and the Grand Prix circuit.
Under other circumstances, it could be a really great experience to learn about the culture and land.

Thanks a lot!

I would not go. In fact, I didn't. I dated a man from Abu Dhabi in my hometown of London who wanted me to go there with him to meet his family. I had the jabs and was all prepared to go when I found out some more about the policies they have over there. It's put me off for life. As a Londoner, I couldn't stomach the things they require.

I think I understand what you mean @deemarshall.
